My current setup involves two profurl lc32 drum reefing systems, very smooth, and some horrible old blocks shackled to the stantions. There is a lot of friction by the time the string gets to the jammers in the cockpit. I will replace the blocks but am considering through bolting some new blocks to the gunnals, about 10 inches high, to take the strain off the already bent stantions. Does anyone know of a better system that would work to reduce the friction?

I think that what you propose will make a significant difference.

Two boats ago I swapped old plastic blocks for a set of roller bearing toe rail ones plus a turning block to bring the line up to the top the coaming and terminated in a jammer. This made reefing a delight.

It is surprising how much friction can be generated by just a few plain bearinged lead blocks.
