Thinking about it more, isn't on purpose of the basic bridle in place of a traveller, that when the main's eased a bit the effective point from which it's sheeted comes a bit off the boat's centreline, just as it does if you ease the traveller when coming off the wind? If so, then this alternative fixed bridle further aloft actually works against that effect.
