John Goode is advising readers of ST to tie onto a pile mooring ring with a bowline. Would you do this? I always thought the bowline couldn't be undone under strain... so you could end up sitting on the pile mooring until slack water!

No I would not! He shows it as a quick way of making a bowline 'on the move' picking up pile moorings being used as an example. I would like to see the equally quick undoing of the same bowline, probably under load, when the bow pickup goes pear shaped and he wants to drop and get clear for another approach! Nothing wrong with that way of making a bowline, just where JG thinks it could be used, yet another complicated way of filling a few column inches.

I have always run a loop back to the boat with no knot. OK if you are there for weeks that a proper thimble and shackle should be used, but over night......

But I still use the mizzen to manouver in a marina!
