I am thinking about cruising to France in company (e.g. Cherbourg) from the UK next year, but speaking to a guy in my marina recently, he suggested it could be a problem for boats under 25ft or Cat C rating entering French waters from the UK. Does anyone know if there are any issues with the French authorities for boats under 25ft or Cat ratings from the UK? Doesn't seem right to me, but thought it best to check.

There are no problems for visitors, although if the boat were French registered then it might be restricted dependent on the equipment it carried. The French do not apply their regulations to visitors. Just make sure you have all the right paperwork (see the RYA website for requirements). biggest limitations for you likely to be finding a big enough weather window to make sure of being able to get there and back.

Remember, hundreds if not thousands of vessels sail into French waters every day from outside EU. I mean boats that were not sold or marketed in EU and therefore do not have or need any CE marking at all

As it happens their categories are not directly related to RCD categories and pre-date CE marking by many years. Does not seem to stop intrepid French sailors from undertaking all sorts of voyages in craft sensible people would not take any further than the pier head!
