French VHF vocab.

Just doing the extension to my VHF certificate at night school for GMDSS etc. As I know a little French I was volunteered to play-act the yachtsman calling St Quay Portrieux Marina. I know all the 'distress' terms are French derived but I realised that I don't know the correct French versions for the Pro-words such as 'this is', 'over' etc. Can anyone help?
Perhaps turning power from 1 to 25 watt is the equivalent of shouting louder!

Usually the French use 'a vous' for over. This may not be officially correct, but it is the only thing I have ever heard in practice.

Instead of "A vous", the word "Parlez" is sometimes used by thhe French

Try telling the french that, they still dislike us and don't let anyone tell you different. Thay are also very proud of their language and are still pissed off about english being the control language of aviation, nautical etc.

Which by the way has the advantage of being used even if you do not want to actually thank the correspondent and never want to see him again!

Yes they are a bit pissed off, but they are getting used to it. We watched French TV news tonight and it is remarkable how many English words are used in normal French. I think the young are quite happy. Most youngsters I know are quite content to improve their English and they say openly that this will be the key to good jobs.

I think the French young know instinctively that if you can't beat it join it.

And the French Navy are very good.

Bill, Working in West Africa, in the oilfield, you see the french really hate having to speak English, but there it is the international language of the oilfield is also English (American) But the universal language of West Africa is french, but they also know the way forward is English. Not because of England, but of America. I agree the younger generation are getting this nationalism out of their systems in all countries, including UK, I hope!

Re: English English.

Given the huge commercial and entertainment influence of the USA, I am continually amazed that so many continental and eastern people want to learn English English. I have no idea why. I have often asked youngsters and there is no consistent reason.
