Talking about a nice looking ship, Got a pic of this in Plymouth last week, from the Netherlands Navy, shes called "freisland" i think, there were two of them in, very nice indeed!

Saw them playing in Whitsand bay last week and looked very nice, but physival size was considerably smaller than the frigates.
Heard from a friend in the know, that they are kitted with 2 conventional diesels AND two gas turbines. They have good range on the diesels and top speed in excess of 42kts with the turbines at full chat!

That is the smallest ship in a class of corvettes ranging from around 1000 to around 2500 tons being peddalled by Dcns....
"Peddaled.................."???? And there was I thinking it had an engine. Well I suppose in these difficult times ........... and it'll help keep the crew fit.

They are actually heavier than the frigates they are replacing.. ( karl doorman class..). But shorter.... They use a heavier commercial construction to keep down cost...

They are a combined diesel electric drive **** with 2x man's providing power to two electric motors driving 2 shafts... Top speed circa 21 knots. They dont need a hi sprint as they are designed as cost effective long range opv's, not frontline combat ships. As part of the cost savings they are highly automated and carry only something like 40 crew..

Opv's and ships suited to assymetric warfare are all the rage right now... Its a lot cheaper to have something like a Holland class off Somolia than a type 23 or a type 45...
