For the last few days I've been watching L'Adroit - a new French offshore patrol vessel (some sites call it a Corvette) apparently undergoing its work-up just offshore of where I'm staying in SoF.

The pic shows it bearing the name Hermes, but all I can see is the pennant number P375. Certainly looks impressive but haven't seen it going full chat yet. The web says 21kts, but I'm sure there's more than that under the hood.

More info

BTW - not raining down here!

Seems to have the aerodynamics of a brick:)

I would rather make love to my 1970's long keeler :p

I expect the shape has something to do with a cloaking device.

That is the smallest ship in a class of corvettes ranging from around 1000 to around 2500 tons being peddalled by Dcns.... Each ship has a slightly different role, the smallest is really a offshore soverienty enforecment ship... Which is the one you saw... The biggest are more like frigates in capabilities...

So in the soveriently enforcement role 21 knots is actually about the going top speed... Any more and you need codog or something and the costs of running go up... In the french navy , if they buy them.. This one is a demonstrator.. They will go towards modernising the fleet of blue water patrol ships the french have...

Dcns are also involved in the new fremm program... And Built the totally cool looking la fayette light frigates.

The only orders so far for the Gowind class of corvettes is from the far east , malaysia i think...

On the contrary - it's a cheap & cheerful patrol boat.
Will be mainly used overseas.

From the Marine Nationale website

Talking about a nice looking ship, Got a pic of this in Plymouth last week, from the Netherlands Navy, shes called "freisland" i think, there were two of them in, very nice indeed!

They are the new Holland Class opv ships... 3600 tons, so frigate sized...they are supposed to have a big conical thing on top... Which is a new thales integrated mast ... Which gives them a capability of monitoring a space considerably larger than their capabilites would suggest... But these clearly havent been installed on those two.

They are all gun armed... Specifically intended for the patrol role and for use in a asymetrical threat enviroment such as counter piracy....

Excellent sensors, but not as capable combat wise as a type 23...

How come DCNS can thrive and almost all of our shipbuilders have gone down.

Cos the idiots we have as pathetic excuses for politicians obey the yoor- oh roolz and the frogs don't.

Horrible looking ship they h ave there- the Dutch one looks the dogs though.

Must be stealth, innit.

Nah, rubbish angles comp[ared to all our expensive stuff, posing round us orf Portland n Plymouth end of May/ mid June this year:D
Have to agree about politicos n their wet behind the ears 'advisers' who commission our kit- my first hand experience suggests that anything outside of an excuslive wine bar or a Starbucks is terra incognita- I am, Thanks to the Gods, 6 years out of date, but suspect the curve is Hell bound!
Heaven Forfend, they are ever at risk- I remember the 07/07 lock down- we run out of clean Agent Provcateur knickers, and that was just the "men"!
Meanwhile certain 'old fashioned, out of tune, old fa@rts' and their Asian Lady support staff wiped their asr@s, n did what needed doing for Queen n Country, n London!
