I have been trying to find a source of large scale (paper) charts of the north French and Belgian coasts and have had no luck at all. Do they do anything like the Admiralty folios? Anyone know?
Derived from the French "SHOM" charts, but slightly cheaper and slightly more practical are the "Navicarte" charts. Navicarte
A very clear and useful one is nr 1010, which covers Boulogne to Ostend.
Quite difficult to obtain online, but Flemish Hydrographical Service produces a highly detailed (and hard to handle ) chart "Vlaamse Banken", sold at continental chandlers.
As mentioned, the folio from 1801 is a more practical choice.
The Belgian Coast is also covered by the official Flemish Hydrographer's charts, very much in the Admiralty style. For sale in any Belgian chandler, but I'm afraid I haven't seen them in chandlers abroad. An official Admiralty agent in Britain might be able to order them.
Interesting little tit-bit .... SHOM are used for BSB Charts as well as UK HO etc. ... as are most Hydrographic Agency stuff from many countries. I found that SHOM charts particularly in the BSB / KAP format ... (BSB 1 > 3) that SHOM based gave displaced position when coupled to GPS. Datum was checked ..... all as per chart / GPS etc. but still a significant displacement of plotted position. Up to 1/4 nm NW in some cases. I do not know if same applies to paper version - I would think not.
The error showed using Maptech, Pocket Nav and Seaclear the same.
