Some sextants have an artificial horizon system for practicing, mine doesn't.
I've used a tray of water and measured the angle between the actual and reflected image and halved it for an elevation - with good success. But its a real faff, and doesn't work well for stars, the reflection not being bright enough.
Anyone heard of a bubble or other artificial horizon system for a Freiburger sextant?

Surprisingly enough I was able to work quite well with the roof of a local building when taking noon sights. I always positioned the same chair in exactly the same place when taking a sight then I was able to make a small correction for the roof. In theory it should've led to a lot of variation but I was generally able to get noon sights to within a mile or two which I was more than happy with.

I have used this: https://www.davisnet.com/product/artificial-horizon/

If you like I can send you a copy of the operating instructions.

Thanks Sticky, but this looks to be what I do now. Instead of a specially made water dish like this I just use a pot plant saucer (wide shallow dish in plastic). I place that on a pedestal and do a sight between the actual sun and reflection of the sun, with lower limb of sun kissing the apparent upper limb of the reflection, then half the angle measured. I can get within a mile of two or 3, but its a setup hassle, and no good in wind. Was more seeking a bolt on bubble or something. Maybe I can make something.
