Yup, I can remember that after seeing that boat I noticed several others with a similar chimney, so I already guessed that the stove is rather popular at your latitudes... 
Ref. the transmission, I half remember that the ingenious bit was a very simple way of reversing the prop rotation, through a lever and belts, with the whole "gearbox" movements at sight.
No doubt allowed also by the low power to be transferred, as you say.
Yup, I've seen the forecast, but believe it or not it wouldn't be the first time if they would prove significantly wrong down here, particularly during winter.
Time will tell... So far, we only turned on a couple of small heaters shortly before going to sleep, and even if we are inside as I'm writing, the saloon door is open and the bit of fresh air from outside is rather pleasant! :encouragement:
