Remind me - can you freeze beer in cans or in bottles, or both? Don't say 'neither' because I did it last year, just can't blimmin' remember which...

Bottles will tend either to break, or to knacker the seal on the lid - either way when it defrosts, it will be a bit dodgy.

Cans will tend to pop that concave bottom, so that they will turn into beer wheebles instead.

Frozen glasses [have to be good ones or they'll crack too] are nice on a hot summer's day.

I do a great frozen margarita too! Recipe available at a price!

Beer in cans (prefereably high alcohol lagers like Stella) Beer in bottles likely to result in broken glass!
Don't ever try it with soft drinks - it took me forever to get the Dr Peppers out of my freezer! <g>

I think it must have been the bottles of Gin you were thinking of. Don't think that freezes due to the high amount of alcohol contained.

I heard a great story about an Aussie bloke who froze a wine box for a camping trip. As it slowly thawed he drained off the cold wine but couldn't work out why he kept falling over. Of course the alcohol thaws first.
Does it work? Imust try it.

Yes. We used to freeze bottles of Becks and then drink the unfrozen alcolholic concentrate (when I was younger and more reckless).

Freezing bottled beer definitely breaks the bottles (ice needs 4% more volume than the equivalent weight of water - why icebergs float )... )
Makes a real mess in the freezer!

Freezing canned beer just expands the can a little. However, in my experience, the beer doesn't quite taste the same afterwards... maybe I drank it too fast without it thawing completely or maybe it was too d*mn cold )

Spirits just go cold and syrupy in a normal domestic freezer...

Freezing is not good for them, near freezing is fine, so get a specific cooler for them and keep it just above freezing. What will go in the freezer and stay there is a bottle of martini pre mixed (get empty gin bottle, mix 4 gin to one sweet martini, add 4 olives, freeze. However be a bit careful pouring into glasses as it will frost them up a treat. Good falling over mix as well.

The dodgy thermostat on our water cooled fridge allows the fridge to freeze when we are motoring briskly. As well as the delights of such things as frozen cucumbers, and tomato ice cream (not bad) we have enjoyed frozen tonic for the G&T's. The plastic bottles allow this without breakage, but the frozen part (we've never managed to freeze all of it) is as flat as a female Chinese gymnast.

Unlike pop (stella, carsberg etc) proper beer should be drunk at room temp. So keep it out of the fridge and remember you're British!

Old trick ....

Instead of ice cubes for your G&T's .... try this ...(actually works for all add-ins) .... freeze lemon slices, orange segments, pineapple segments etc. etc ....... use those in the drink instead.

<<<proper beer should be drunk at room temp>>>

Tend to agree with you unless the room temperature is 30C or something. Obviously I am sort of countercutural on that here in NZ and with the Oz's and I do wonder about the number who in both countries sit outside a bar in the freezing cold drinking freezing cold beer - even if it is proper imported stuff.

There is a method to the madness. Frozen beer cans can keep a cool box cold for 4+ days, and that is often the reason for this particular peculiar habit. Having a cool beer at the end of the day is quite nice, especially so if you don't have a fridge and it's a warm day, and in the meantime your food stays fresh

Re: Proper Beer !!!!!

I have always maintained that proper beer tastes wrong if drunk outside in the sunb. It should be consmed at just under room temperature in a nice dark pub. This has caused many disputes on sunny days. I was recently vindicated, on hearing on R4 that the yeast in real ale, when exposed to UV, suffers an enzymic reaction that causes a change called skunkiness, at least I think that's what he said. Of course there is no live yeast in yellow cold beer so it won't happen to that.

Never mind the beer - we've got the remains of a bottle of Aquavit in our freezer - heaven knows how we'll get it cold enough when we move onto the boat - probably have to return to Norway where it originates !

If you've never tried the stuff - do - but only in eggcupfuls - it is _lethal_ !
