Freeman 22 repaint

I am restoring a Freeman 22 mk1. It has had many coats of paint over the years and I need to repaint it above the waterline. I have started sanding the hull back but I will need to apply a filler to sand smooth before painting. Can I use standard car body filler as it's above the waterline or can someone please give me some advice as to which product to use. There's no huge damage just small unevenness from different layers of paint.

I have been using Milliput extra fine filler.

It's a two part moisture curing epoxy putty . Very easy to get smooth on application with
little or no sanding. Unfortunately, there are only two or three colours available.

Unless you are sure, and you probably are not, that all previous paint is two-pack, beware of two pack products. They do not work well on top of single pack.

if there is a lot of filling and fairing to do then use a dedicated product such as International Watertite or make your own using a normal liquid epoxy mix with a fairing filler added. You will find useful information on how to do it on the Wessex Resins website using West epoxy, but there are other makes available - I use Blue Gee.

The effort you put in with preparation has a big influence on the final quality of the finish. If you are using International products then two coats of Pre Kote flattened down with 600 wet and dry followed by two coats of Toplac. Again International have plenty of information on how to use their products. Same with other brands such as Hempel or Epifanes.

I repainted my hull sides earlier this year and had to smooth out some small gouges and low spots, I used Marine Filler in a tube (as the areas were so small) and then two coats of Pre-Kote followed by 3 coats of Toplac. Prepped it all over several weekends and finally applied the final coats over a nice sunny (thought I had won the lottery with the weather!) day in March.

Very happy with the results. The Marine Filler was easy to apply and sanded very quickly. We also tried Milliput but found that we couldnt apply it as easily with the scrapers.

Whilst I am not promoting this firm, I used this multi surface primer, then rolled their two pack.

Boat was previously done in single pack, flatted back. I wasn't concerned with it passing a close up inspection, so top coat ( 2 actually ) were not tipped off, just rolled

It’s amazing how many have been stripped back to find that there was nothing wrong with the gel coat.

I really wish this was the case with mine. The gel coat has certainly seen better days.
