On occasions I struggle with a decent internet connection and there is usually a strong signal from another boat close by.

I have decided to share my WiFi broadband with other forum members

look for

Now I realize that my mini net work isnt going to be much help unless you happen to be berthed in bembridge, yarmouth, lymington at the same time but if you think its a good idea why not add to the net work with your forum name

YBW*****

keeping the same password
YBWFORUM

If there are a few of us that sign up then we can post the idea on Scuttleburks and PBO too.

Good idea but could you then be responsible for any 'activities' that other users get up to unless you keep a log of who's using it and when?

Perhaps something to look into first?

One would hope that anyone using it would be sensible in their usage ... otherwise they spoil it for everyone ...

DAKA - it might be better to have a UserGroup for this sort of subject - as at the moment - anyone who reads this forum (registered or not) will get your password ...

Hi Adey, I might be a bit thick but they will be using their own pc, and I dont think they can cause me any danger ??
If they download loads of films my service will be slow and I would just cut the WiFi for that location.

Hi Fireball, thats a good point but any newbies in the area may be tempted to say hello and perhaps join in but I agree if others want to add to the network and see that as a barrier then I am happy to change my password.

It doesnt look like many think it is a good idea anyway.

I think its a great idea dont let the cant does put you off. Any porn etc ids down to their ip address not yours. its only the same as using a public wifi access pointanyway.
I think that is the point - the IP address will be Daka's and if he happens to be moored next to Gary Glitter, its Daka's hard drives that will be taken away for examination....

Can you explain how this "porn" stuff ends up at the correct computer then if it is only identifying the Wifi router?

I am a simple man & was last involved in computers at machine code level some decades ago but it seems to me that the IP address must be at user level & the WiFi is only a router, forwarding the info between the user & the site - much as all the telco's routers do along the way.

I look forward to a short & simple tutorial to help me understand this interwebby thing.

Outside and Inside

I look forward to a short & simple tutorial to help me understand this interwebby thing.[/QUOTE]

The router at the telephone exchange issues an IP address ((lease) if configured DHCP (Dynamic Host configuration protocol)) when you switch your router on and it askes for one.

It will be typically 213.202.170.xx (BT) that is the "Outside" connected to the telephone line.

Your "inside" ip address is probably 192.168.1. 3 to 253 again issued by the router to you network devices. Type http://192.168.1.254 on a bt router and it will log you on to it in your browser.

Your router then does Network Address Translation (NAT) between your inside and outside - so any device on the inside add a wee bit so that the router can get back to the right PC on the inside network.

If you want to look at the sort of routing that goes on go to the wee start box on the left and type command, at the "dos" prompt (which of course it isn't anymore)

type tracert www.google.com and it will show you the default gateway (your router outside) and all the hops to google.

I think!

If you want to come and sit in my front garden and have a BTOpenzone (BTFon) account you can use a bit of my bandwidth for free :)

Ian G,
Thanks for that (err, I think!) I will try to rephrase what I think I learned as a test of understanding.

OK, so the home router carries temporary translation tables & the Fuzz can't actually identify the culprit unless they find traces of the forbidden files on a given hard drive.

Which is fair enough, I won't get a prison sentence, but I will lose my hard drive & all it contains for several months while some forensic nerd fiddles looking for his "evidence" that isn't there, and may well find something else that he can prosecute for that I didn't even realise was illegal. Jolly inconvenient I guess.

That about it?

If you have any files or directories on your pc set as 'shared', they'll be accessible by anyone using your connection.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice given, it does sound a bit risky.

Seeing as the 'network' hasnt been widely adopted one single one would be a waste of time anyway.

If anyone recognises my boat and wants Wifi just pop round with a beer which will allow adequate time for me to make an assessment:) .
