Got an e-mail from JBT Marine in Lee on Solent. If you go and view their selection of Ribs they'll give you a free Mini Epirb up to 30th November. Worth a short journey perhaps?

It does matter if I have to fit it to a Volvo part that I don't yet have!

Don't be daft! If it was meant to fit to anything from Vilevo, what on earth makes you think it would be free?

Thanks for the 'education.' Although a relative newcomer to this forum, from your posts, I get the impression that your nautical knowledge is rarely wrong.

Emerg Posn Indic Choco Teapots

It's an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon.

There are two sorts, cheap 121.5MHz ones that communicate by VHF with planes and SAR helicopters and CG stations, and expensive 406 ones that communicate via satellite to international SAR coordination centres.

The 121.5 cheap versions will no longer work in a couple of years time, the whole system will be switched off. Replaced by new style VHF radios. So, excuse my cynicism, but I suspect the "free" offer is of the chocolate-teapot 121.5 sets.

121.50Mhz

JFM - I understood that 121.5 will still be the air band distress call frequency channel? However that lower range and sea coverage capability will be lost. However the channel will still be monitored by air craft and the two main UK ground stations so whilst it is a chocolate tea pot - it will work fine in some situations.

Probably better to get the latest safety kit as it becomes available anyway.

Re: 121.50Mhz

Yes I think that's right Barry. So if you are in mega distress you can activate epirb and passing aircraft might pick up your signal and bearing and report it to land stations. But it's a bit hit and miss relying on that (?), and CG will definitely not listen to 121.5 anymore. AFAIK 121.5 epirbs will soon no longer be sold as marine safety devices because basically unsuitable. Slightly better than chocolate teapot then, but not much.

Anyway, one would get lost if using a Nav6000 would one? I mean as the only person to have used both you must be able to confrm that, eh?

Re: dunno why I bothered!!!

mark, sorry to pour cold water on post, the quick info was appreciated! No such thing as free lunch, the only thing given out free to boaters AFAIK is petrol fill ups!
