I seem to remember reading in PBO a little while back that there are some sources for free or very low cost electronic charts.

Would anyone happen to know any sources?

Does anyone remember the article?

Cheers.

As far as I know, the only free e charts available are for US waters courtesy of their forward thinking hydrographic office. A google search will locate a myriad of suppliers.

for uk waters, i found the latest chart pack on offer from hydrographic office to be reasonably priced and a worthwhile buy.

Charts of USA coastal water can be downloaded legally and without charge from the NOAA web site. Other countries including Australia also make charts available free of charge, however in the UK and Europe, no such service is available.

Dave,
Do you have a link to the free Australian charts? I have a copy of the Admiralty charts and they are expensive.

Sorry Graham,
my mistake - it seems that Aus maps aren't free.
I use OziExplorer and they have an Aussie page that I've glanced at before now. There they have free Map files which are used in Ozi to calibrate Raster charts. I'd misread this and thought that the charts were free. Having checked back, I discover they're not.

Sorry to have raised false hopes. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
