Fray Bentos - why do we eat this muck?

the first time i heard of these pies was on this forum recently! and just noticed them in the supermarket today, read the back, one tin contains 2 thirds of your daily recommended salt allowance! Pretty bad stuff!

I advise that you do not repeat my experiment

I didn't think you were supposed to eat them!

It's a kind of bilge-carried obol for Charon if TSHTF, or you end up on the IOW after the chip-shop has closed.

Alas, I had to buy my own FB tin 'co the previous owner didn't leave me one, nor do we have any as family heirlooms....

I think you are all confusing the pies and the puddings.
The puddings are awful, the pies not so bad.
The pie tins are a challenge to open though..:D

That reminds me of a test pilots' verdict on a new aircraft; " the cockpit is difficult to access - it should be made impossible "

That armour-plated tin was some kind soul at the Frey Bentos factory's last desperate attempt to prevent consumption by humans or indeed anything organic.

Utter philistines, the lot of you!

These delightful epicurian commodities should be praised by the whole world. They have all you need, just get some Smash instant mashed potatoes and instant gravy, (why waste time with fresh food, all that peeling and boiling and bashing!!!) a veritable feast, I am getting quite hungry as I key these words, yum yum

But then I forget, non of you had the pleasure(!) of my mothers attempts at cooking, poor thing tried really hard to feed us well, but the vegatables were like soup and any meat was as hard as gravel, after that Frey Benetos was the Ambrosia of the Gods

FB pies are hard currency on our boat as bribes to persuade my number four son to sail with us.
He is not one for the social round and when the parents decamp to a neighbouring boat "For a quick drink." He know full well that "quick" does not adequately describe this activity and keeps himself happy and contented with an FB pie and a computer game until parents return.

Sadly he will be off to Uni soon and is likely to be unavailable to crew, so the remaining pie complement will have to do duty as ballast.

BTW if you regard FB puddings as inedible you should try Hachis Parmentier -- the French Shepherds Pie that thinks it's a Pot Noodle. Needless to say, No.4 son thinks they are delicious. Thankfully, he appreciates the good stuff as well.

There's either something wrong with you lot or something wrong with me 'cos I LIKE Fray Bentos Cake and Sidney pudding!

Boiled one up with some tinned new spuds last time out on Brigantia and it was yummy

OK, I'll grant you they're not as good as my home made S&K puds but they're top notch boating grub

I always store up with FB pies before a voyage and I never throw the tops of the tins away after I've opened the tins either, I give the lids to local people.
It's great to see a village re-roofed with circular tin roof tiles when I leave, not that I eat many FB's you understand..:D :D
