Just got back from Pompey after what should have been a straight forward passage from Lowestoft to Portsmouth. We left Lowestoft on Friday Morning into a real peasouper. Visibility down to 100m, smooth sea state and the prospect of a good passage to Ramsgit which was to be an overnight stop and refuelling point.
Thankfully, the fog started to clear at the Longsand head bouy and we could get the power back on. We then lost all 12v power and as a result, the GPS, auto pilot and both VHFs went awol. The Radar still operated as it was on 24v.

Went in to Ramsgit and refuelled as planned, leaving at 0830 on Saturday. Smooth sea state, visibility maybe 2NM and all is well, untill the revs started to fall off the stbd engine. Decided to go in to Dover and investigate. The turbo air inlet filter had blocked up and started to suck itself inside out. Cleaned it all up with petrol, fitted 2 new 12v batteries and we were off again. Weather was good , not much traffic.
Dungeon ness was a bitch. Wind agin tide and a nasty slop picked up, suddenly a motor boat came across our bows, we were stand on but he was adamant about getting in the way. Turns out to be the range patrol vessel and asked us to move further offshore, which we did, not wanting to be shot at you will understand.

Seastate was a bit sloppy and the revs started to fall off again.
We tried to find somewhere with quieter area of water to investigate and fix the problem and Eastbourne got the vote. We found that the Stbd side exhaust flexible hose had split.causing exhaust gas mixed with seawater to be sucked into the turbo, resulting in an air filter being blocked with salt crystals.
The offending filter was cleaned again. the exhaust flexible,(150mm OD) was repaired using strips of canvas and duct tape to stem the flow of water squirting out from the hose, and we were ready to leave Sovereign Harbour.
Sunday morning as we left Eastbourne was as near perfect as you could wish for. Hopefully our temporary repair would get us to Portsmouth. I am happy to say it did. We arrived with no further proplems apart from the 2 new batteries powering the 12v systems were not charging from the engine alternaters, but were ok as long as the generator was providing power for the charger.
We then arrived in Portsmouth to be confronted with an aft bilge space filled up with diesel oil and a leaking transfer pipe from the after fuel tank. How do we fix this problem on a Sunday evening at 18.00? A rubber glove fixed over the end of the leaking pipe with a couple of Jubilee clips and sealed with Duct tape did the trick. Fitted a new section of exhaust hose and I was out of there. The solent was very quiet on Sunday morning though.

I would have learnt a lot of I'd been with you, though even I am getting used to getting in th engine bay after nearly every trip.

Excellent write up Paul and glad that you finally completed the passage.

What was the boat?

Now that's what I call a trip, always something to do, I do get bored just sitting there. Joking aside as already mentioned an excellent post, would be worthy of a place in a boatie magazine!
