France trip

Thinking of doing a run across to Calais before Xmas to stock up on you know what, mainly cos I've been totalling up the cost of my bottle list for all my customers and its frightening. Must be cheaper over there.

Just need to wait for cold fosty morning with windless seas.

Tips wanted on (Byron) entry to Calais I believe there's a swing bridge ??

Also anyone know how far the nearest Super duper hyper market is from the port, hofeully just a large cab ride. Should get a fair bit in my aft cabin.

Much more cost effective to just bring loads of fags back and swap them for booze over here. IMHO

No one can force me to come here.<font color=red> I'm a volunteer<font color=blue>

In Calais you wait for the swing bridge 2-3 times per tide. On entry find a berth. Starboard side there's electric & water, Port side moor on the wall for ½ price.
Short walk into Calais (Port) town square, left hand side find the Vietnamese guy, pick yer booze and he'll run it down the boat for you. There is a small supermarket in the square also left hand side at bottom right. Several other booze shops in or near the square.
Fags! get them from the Tabac also down on the left. Bear in mind that although substantially cheaper than UK they are not as cheap as in Belgium. If you are feeling rich you can hire a car (right hand side of square) and run out the big Hypermarket near the Chunnel terminal.

Do you think I'll get me collar felt by coastguards if I return to Ramsgate?
Maybe better to head back to Chatham with the booty?

As an auxiliary Coastguard of some 25+ years standing I can assure you they/we are only interested in Search & Rescue. Customs and Excise are another matter /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
Naaah! As long as you aren't actually smuggling contraband then C&E wil not give a siht (must learn to spell faeces]

In the current climate I thought they might stop you if they thought you may have asylum seekers on boat.

Hells teeth - and they are talking about combined control rooms for Fire and Ambulance. !!!! Actually i think the RAF make the best control rooms. They push around little areoplanes on big maps. Fire and Amb could use little Corgi Cars !!!!

or even radio controlled cars now that would be fun. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Reality time !!!

Sorry if someone already made the point, but unless you are bringing serious quantities back, IMHO that it is cheaper to go by car/ van and tunnel/ ferry.

By the time you pay for fuel, harbour costs, dinner and factor in a breakdown.......

Boring, not so much fun but reality.

Re: Reality time !!!

Three reasons Mike
a) we will be bringing loads back cos I've got to get all the bottles for my customers

b) I've not yet crossed the channel in her and shes now up for sale, so exitement of first cross channel trip, more miles logged toward Y/Master etc

c) Chatham- Ramsgate 42nm Ram-Calais say 30nm therefore round trip approx 144nm, at about .70 gpm = 100 gall @ 1.28 = £128.00

Now about 6 of us going therefore £128 divided by 6 = £22.00

Dont know what combined car ferry charges would be for say 3 cars with two people in each ?

Re: Reality time !!!

Mike, if we worried about boating costs we'd all take up model railwaying. And you my dear friend are as bad as the rest of us, I have seen your son Mark begging food because you have spent Sally's housekeeping on goodies for your boat /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Reality time !!!

No way ho-se shes not likely to breakdown now in fact only one engine has ever stopped whilst cruising and that was down to the low tanks with crap plus huge seas.
Anyway after all we've done recently it would have to be an act by the devil himself.
