France - Cat C Boats Illegal....

FYI

In France, and for french flagged ships, you have a double classification :

1) Construction from A to D (this is a CE classification) depending on sea and weather only : C boats are not allowed to winds > 6 bft and waves > 2 m
2) Navigation from 1 to 6 (this is a french classification) : distance depends upon security devices on board

Thus a given boat is C6 (close coastal) and could possibly be C1 (open sea), but who would put a life raft on a C boat and take the risk to meet unfair weather conditions ?

It might not be illegal but do you think Insurers would be happy for a boat to cross the channel outside its designed specification limits ?
Yes. Insurers care about risk and margins, not pieces of paper. Yachts have been insured for crossing the channel since long before RCD categorisation existed in the UK and insurers have not found it an issue worth pursuing so far, so why would that change now ? If an insurer put restrictions on boat use according to type then they would lose the business of people who consequently decided that it was too restrictive to be worth having.

Conversely, since they have no practical experience that pleasure boats get into trouble through being used outside their categorisation, insurers have no incentive to bring in specific restrictions.

I expect a clause will get added in the small print soon to the effect the vessel must not be deliberately used outside its intended design.
For the reasons above, that seems unlikely. But also, as noted by others in these forums, RCD Category != intended design.

"Sealine S29, designed to go fast, pull the chicks and not leave you destitute if you were already pretty comfortably off and single."

Sounds like a reason to upgrade, although I might have to rephrase it slightly when presenting it to swmbo - e.g. "Smoother engines, easier to dock, and a much smarter basin in the bathroom".
