Fowey moorings

I see Fowey has increased the price its visitors swing moorings again.
By the time i pay for the mooring then two showers ashore that;s nearly £25, plus water taxis give it the same cost nearly as a marina in Falmouth.
I'll keep missing that port now a crying shame as I know i did like to visit, especially during the week.

Buy a tender to save the water taxis, and fit hot water and have showers on board?
Mooring Price sounds quite reasonable for such a popular place on the South coast
 
Went there last summer, it was as far west as we got from Ipswich. We soon realised that it was worthwhile blowing up the dinghy to get ashore - no wonder the water taxi seemed to have so few customers !
 
£19 in R Yealm for us (33ft).

Fowey charge £20, unchanged from last year. Definitely blow up the dinghy.

Marina in Plymouth £38.88. All in last few days.
 
I haven't been there for maybe six years, when I think we paid something like £15. I find watching apparently fit people using water taxis very entertaining, though the taxi wash is often an irritation. the trouble is that there is possibly nothing to compare in all cruising with a fine evening on a Fowey mooring enjoying a drink while watching the late sun light up the houses on both sides. For this, I suppose we have to be prepared to fork out.
 
Just spent a night there. £21 for the night, and dingied ashore. £7.70 for a pint of bitter and a pint of cider in the Galleon and a great Pizza for £9. £21 a night in the Helford and £8.40 a pint of each in the shipwrights and £13 for a small bland fish and chips. £35 a night in Pendennis marina and a half mile walk to Wetherspoons. £16.50 a night in Salcombe and £9.30 for a pint of each in the Ferry inn. In QAB Plymouth tonight, free berth in Marina as our home berth is an MDL marina (however, the years berthing is not cheap) and a short walk to the spoons. What you gain on one hand you lose with another.

you didn't say how much a couple of pints in Falmouth's wetherspoons was?
 
salcombe had to do a rethink when the started to price themselves out of the market after people voted with their feet.
Same as Sutton when they charged me £49 a night for a 10m boat, that bit them aswell!
With luck fowey will come to their senses and reconsider their strategy.
Its not packed s it was a few years ago.

I've paid a lot less for beer in London.

I'll make sure the bar is well stocked when we next visit.

I agree I have no option as I’m there but the south coast is getting stupid now
I anchor everywhere I can to reduce costs. I miss Fowey entirely now as it’s too much for me.
 
Fowey Harbour Commissioners and the Water Taxi are two separate entities. The harbour staff are really helpful and are aware that the cost of mooring coupled with a ride in a water taxi for 4 make can make for a fairly expensive visit. However, the Harbour Staff do not set the prices of the water taxi.

I'm with a number of other forumites on this post - visit Fowey and pump up the dinghy. It is one of the nicest spots in the UK to take a boat (IMHO).
 
I'll be there in a week or so, will I also pay to anchor? I guess so... and then if I did no doubt I'll be too far up to row to the town? Having not been there before but often been told how lovely it is I'm thinking I'll just grin and bear the cost of the convenience and enjoy the place.
 
If you haven't been there before it's worth almost anything you can afford, I'm based in Chichester which is a lovely harbour but Fowey is special, my favourite harbour.

If you have a good inflatable and engine or your boat is reasonably shallow draft it's very worthwhile taking a trip up the harbour when tide allows.

Also have a look around Polruan on the other side, between them lots of history.

The town is lovely and can't be anything as boutique as Salcombe, but beware a friend who first visited sailing with me and revisits regularly noted that the shops now have two sets of price tags, the normal and the ones with more zero's for when a cruise ship is in !
 
I have also given up with the South West and their rip-off prices.

Last time I was down there (about 5 years ago), the charged me £29 in Fowey to hang off a yellow bouy in the middle of the harbour, and Salcolmbe charged me £18 for anchoring up by the saltstone.

If it's your first visit and a destination, then you will have to pay for the experience.
When I was 'passing through' on my way to the Sillies a few years back I went up the river and anchored off Golant for a couple of days. I dried out, but being bilge keels it was no issue. I didn't have the need to go ashore but if I remember correctly, on my way out I stopped off on a waiting pontoon at Fowey to pick up some milk.
