Had a bit of a drama on saturday, motoring from falmouth to fowey as no wind in my sadler 34 with my daughter and my dog. Closing Fowey past the cannis rock and 1/2m off the engine note changed and discovered water pouring form the engine box.

Cut a long story short we had a major leak some where and we were filling fast, hand pumping and the electric pump didnt seem to do anything. i called Fowey harbour and asked for assistance and a tow.
With a few moments it seemed they were there with a large portable bilge pump, this shifted the water from the boat. I tracked the the leak to a stern gland failure (2 years old) and stemmed the flow to a trickle.

We were lifted within the hour of arriving and placed on the quay.
One of their staff whos wife is expecting their child any moment stayed till 8.30 with another coming in to oversee the lift from a wedding party.

I was told that Monday he would have a look and see what the problem is.

To his word i arrived monday and there he was starting work removing the shaft.

2hours later all repaired, and an hour after was in the water.

We hear loads of stories of bad service but this in my view was exceptionally good service, they saved my boat from sinking helped in every way they could, they were professional and reassuring in their approach to my drama. An absolute credit to the Harbour.

The bill £98

Captain Sutherland has very good staff, and due to their efforts i didn't actually find out if sadler's are unsinkable. I have visited this harbour for years and will for years to come.

I would like to say on this forum thankyou to the guys at Fowey Harbour

it was the packing gland type,

bob

Thank God it was a stuffing box,
Otherwise I suspect we would have had a lot of puffing and blowing about: Modern seals, Why do people fit them? Risk of catastrophic problems, Never heard of a traditional stern gland failure... & etc, etc.
Always nice to hear about help and good service though.

Can't really comment about the harbour staff apart from polite, pleasant, etc but found the marine engineers up the road from the ferry very good a few years back when a carb got blocked with dirty fuel (went through 2 filters). Problem at 10.00 hours and fixed by 15.00 hours.

Loctudy

We had a similar experience. Water in faster than pumps could handle when under power.
Engineer at Luctudy fixed the problem within I hour of arrival.
It was late on Friday of a long week end.
I was very impressed

I had the same experience in fowey in the summer. Passage from dartmouth. hour before arrival try to start engine nothing.... so decided to sail in either anchor or pick buoy up. radioed Fowey HM to state my intentions. within mins he was at the harbour entrance and towed me in on to a buoy. without any hesitation he was onboard looking at the engine and had it fixed it in 30 mins gave him some beer tokens for his efforts turned out to be the HM mechanic.

Great stuff fowey.

Fowey must attract good folk. One of my racing opponents from my Enterprise days at Leeds SC retired to Fowey a good few years ago. Last I heard (five years ago) He was commodore at the Fowey sailing club. If Gordon Coombes is still around he is one of lifes true gentlemen..
