Fowey is very local to me, and I know it is the same price to anchor as it is to use a mooring provided, as others have said it is all to do with room, or rather the lack of it!
But at least they take your money with a smile, does that still make it robbery!!!!!!!

If you are able to take the ground go further up river to "Golant" very quiet away from the hustle
and bustle of a busy harbour, Plus the fact its free of charge, well I go there on a mates boat occassionly and have yet to pay!
Also a decent pub almost on the beach. " Fishermans Arms " but obviously it is tidal.

You are obviously upset, but look carefully at what you have written.
“We were waved away when we asked one yacht if we could raft up.”

Is this intolerance by others the fault of Fowey?

No I think not, however this is where your problems began, maybe its time that we looked at ourselves, the way we interact with others. These people would have seen your predicament yet they offered you no assistance? Would you have offered them an opportunity to raft if the situation were visa versa?

Had you been able to raft with the other yacht the “Fowey Experience” could have been completely different and you would have gladly paid the £14.00 and not even bothered to mention on the forum that you had wonderful time in Fowey and met some truly generous and amenable people.

I understand that the situation would make your Blood Boil but look at the route cause and when you next meet the people that wouldn’t let you raft, Hope they might require your assistance and take it from there.

I still find this argument flawed. If the harbour needs to be dredged for commercial shipping then surely the commercial shipping should pay for that, not leisure boats. If it is inappropriate for boats to anchor then its either forbidden or not. There in no cost to the harbour for a boat anchoring other than the cost of the revenue foregone by the space taken. In which case set up moorings and earn the money. Where does this money go? Does the Duchy of Corwall have a take?

I have no idea about right of refusal, but surely one has to have confidence that the buoy in question is ok for more than one boat of such and such a length? I can think of many buoys I have paid to hang on, which nevertheless have had me setting my anchor-watch after looking at the fixtures and fittings!

I have sailed from Fowey for 25 years with my family, before moving to Saafamptan with my own boat. In the last 15 years, Fowey has become an expensive place. My folks used to pay £50 hd's on their mooring (owned) and i think that they now pay in excess of £1200.

I love Fowey, as it is a beautiful town, and one of the easiest ports I know to enter. However, the extortion commited by HM Govt/Duchy/ECC etc is becoming a problem, and the pilfering from residents boats hasn't eased either. Such a shame that these posts will probably put someone off visiting, but unfortunately, it is the way it is.

The RFYC still do good beer tho!

You stick with us, m\'dear

I don't know about the marina charges (why else would one go to the trouble and expense of taking a husband if not to have life's little irritations, like marina bills, total failures of the electrical system at Violetta Towers, blocked heads etc. taken care of?) but I have never heard of anyone being charged to anchor anywhere in our neck of the woods. Partly, I suppose, because we don't normally anchor in harbours, as such.

We do pay £80 per year to a local oyster farmer for the privilege of having a mooring in his creek, but that's different. Anyway, it's been stolen (all but) by a certain spectrescrivenor who shall remain nameless, although he is by no means blameless. (Fortunately for the guilty party I am a woman of the mildest and most forgiving disposition) Every year we offer to pay said farmer more, but the answer is always the same - "no, thank you, that's quite enough..."

But, m'dear spec....I mean, ghostwriter, t'would be a mortal shame to deprive yourself of the west country. Dartmouth, Salcombe, Fowey, Plymouth, Falmouth, Helford.......Wonderful places all (there are many more) and worth a visit at any price - especially if you can go outside the main season. For my money, Salcombe (out of season) is, of all of them, the most especially blessed, but they are all glorious . Don't let Lynette put you off (I'm sure you'd agree, Lyn, wouldn't you?)

Re: how many wrongs make a right ?

But anchoring in the Dart costs less than a fiver, much the same in Salcombe. Almost £15 is a rip off even in a beautiful place like Fowey.

And as for it being what it takes to run a trust port, well that's total bolx, most of the money collected goes on admin fees not on maintaining facilities. They want to do the same on the Exe, in fact Capn Sutherland from Fowey was brought up to offer advice, only he had no idea of the difference between Fowey and the Exe.

ouch

Violetta Towers ? you mean that the building cross the road is an annex to your Shakespearean shack ??

Anyhow , the buoy is mine now , just a matter of time , I have been able to tug it fara enough and have been hanging on long enough , so now I reckon it's mine....of course , I'm willing to reconsider if there are some oysters at play , now THAT is a serious argument !

naah , I'm not deterred by Lynette's notes, au contraire , but it's that tumblehome lady (I just wonder to which part that name applies ?? oops , sorry , wrong forum) uttering such weird things.

You don\'t want to take Auntie Vi\'s advice

You don't want to take Auntie Vi's advice and visit Dartmouth, Salcombe, Fowey etc, she's only trying to get rid of you from visiting East coast so she can get her mooring back /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
IMHO the eastcoast is where you want to visit, the southwest is awfull, honest... ! ! ! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
