Fowey - another inflation beating price increase for moorings! Beware.

I like the idea of a discounted book of tickets. Great idea. I'll be bringing it to the next board meeting.

Discounted tickets are already available and have been for years. My club issues them, about a £5 reduction on the £18 price...

I like two of the ideas:

a) the pre-paid vouchers. The Commisioners would find that they work out very well as all such vouchers or gift cards do. Basically people buy them and not all redeem them. I would consider a 5 night and a 10 night voucher scheme, perhaps with the former allowing one friday or sat night, and the latter having two friday or saturdays so as not to discourage uptake by those of us that work occasionally in the weekdays. I know I would not buy a 10 night voucher book but a 5 night would be a no brainer and the reality is that I might only use 3 of the nights in a season, but at the point of purchase I would stiull feel happy as I would be getting a "deal"

b) an anchorage. BTW the argument about moving anchored boats is a non-starter - other places manage, for example Falmouth.

Paid £24 on a buoy last night for my 37', hadn't moored up longer than 5 minutes before two very smart young men in a dory arrived to take my money - why does it take two? Significant cost saving to be made there, other harbours manage very well with one person. I doubt we will be returning this year.
I was planning to stay 2 nights but not at that price for a mooring with no facilities. Falmouth on the hook for £10.50 with showers is much better value.

Interesting reading and nice to see a member of the trust reading it/giving feedback. I think Fowey does a good job with what they have and pricing will always be difficult to get just right and will never be right for every one. it's usually a one night out from Plymouth for us or on route to Falmouth or further. As a comparison my (old) Volvo would use around £25.00 of petrol in the 90mile round trip from Yelverton before any parking costs. Mooring at £18 for a 36' seems about right, maybe more size breaks in the pricing would be good for smaller boats, 7-11m is quite a big jump and there are many boats that are at the lower end sub 9m that are a 10th of the cost to own/buy compared to a 36'er.

Only negative comment I have from a recent visit is the water taxi needs to slow down through the moorings, way too fast and too much wash, too close to a boat with an avon tied to the stern and people in the cockpit having an end of sail glass or two. One of those hang on to your glasses and warn those downstairs moments.

I'll be back.

" Nice to see a member of the trust reading it/giving feedback ". But maybe more size breaks in the pricing would be good for smaller boats, " 7-11m is quite a big jump and there are many boats that are at the lower end ".

+1 also aplies for pontoon berths prices, I will also be back, but it would be nice to think that the metre price charging range would be available in smaller size ranges say 6-8m , 8-10m , 10 -12m rather than trying to catch the majority of visiting boats in one large group size range of 7-11m.

Also +1 for speed of water taxis throught the moorings and passing pontoons.

Other than that, Fowey is a lovely place to visit and I will be looking forward to another visit again soon.

I do hope that the harbour commissioners take heed and indeed not jeopardise the excellent harbour staff who in my opinion are second to none on the south coast, by price increases that obviously isn't going down well.
its always good to hear others patronising statements that they pay their way in life as if the rest of us don't, though possibly a vested interest in keeping their own mooring charges lower by hoping visitors will bolster funds.
I for one have not visited this year nor will I in future until the harbour office sees sense. the boating industry I feel is or very soon will be in crisis and the keeping of a boat is a luxury and when funds are getting tight its not rocket science to realise what's going first!
I wonder what the Fowey business men and women who will definitely see a sharp decline in takings are actually doing? as red comrade stated he (like the rest of us) spent considerable amounts in the town and this knock on effect will further jeopardise jobs and a thriving holiday town.

I didnt go there this weekend either, nor last weekend. Entirely due to these rises. But am loving the much shorter hop to Helford and furtling around the bay for a change, and so is SWMBO now the Shipwrights has sorted itself out.

The Harbour Commissioners are all voluntary and receive absolutely no re numeration whatsoever...... I am one of them.....As a Commissioner it is my duty to take on board your views and I sincerely do. Keep the views coming as they will influence our decision making.....Russ.

I've been well pleased to have visited Fowey since the early 70s and hope I'll continue to do so for a long while yet. Was it Peter Pye, or Eric Hiscock, who mentioned that Fowey was 'perhaps the finest small port in the world'....? Whatever, the Harbourmasters various and their staff have throughout that time been unfailingly helpful and welcoming..... and so have the staff and members at the Fowey Galants!

It does get congested at times, and we've been awakened by the neighbours partying now and then.....

.....but the young guys in the Harbour Patrol launch have been known to 'have a quiet word' with revellers. We much prefer the sound of bells from the old church to help us surface of a morning.

I'd like to suggest to the Commissioners, via Russ, that they institute a 'Winter Discounted Book of Vouchers' - which doesn't expire at the end of December - and consider a rate for vessels smaller than 10m. That would encourage me to visit from Plymouth rather more often in the 'off season' and take my Winter Fuel Allowance into the town for fish, chips 'n beer..... ;)

There are 10 of us who usually visit Fowey for a weekend especially if the weather is good.
There are three of us who visit midweek too.
Out of the ten of us who regularly visit at the weekends two did and of the mid weekers none.
Out of a minimum of 10 visits they lost 8, good business?
