Four Masted Barque rounding Cape Horn 1928 - Captain Irving

I watched it a few days ago. I wonder where you could find a crew with the physical and mental strength to do what they did, and then find more crews for all the other sailing ships. I thought it was a fascinating insight into the character of the times.

That is the Peking. I visited the ship in New York about 10 years ago. It was in a very sorry state.

However, still impressive. And impressive that there was no engines of any kind, no electricity. Nothing.
Absolutely nothing to go wrong.

In the meantime, ownership has been transferred to a German maritime museum and the ship brought to Hamburg.

They have done a magnificent restoration - in a way only the Germans would do and fund.

Like Woody I watched it a few days ago and have nothing but admiration for the men that sailed in her, but they were different people than we are today.

Absolutly nothing to go wrong? That's why there is not one single shipwreck or dead soul attributed to the days of square riggers.

Should be made compulsory viewing for some of the "woke" generation. ?

Absolutely, also they should abolish the plimsoll line, get rid of all those naby-pamby Colregs, privatise the RNLI, issue letters of marque to enable British privateers to, once more, roam the seven seas and help themselves to everyone else's property. Force the Chinese to buy opium (that'll stop them becoming an economic force!).

Bring back the good old days!

I like fact 8 (y)

Why? (Fact No 8 "Custom dictated that only sailors who had rounded the horn were allowed to wear a gold hoop earring in the ear that passed closest to island – a sign marking their courage as a seaman.)

Are you trying to tell us something? ?

"Privatise the RNLI" Eh?

No I just think it's a nice tradition

Well, I'll have my ear pierced if and only if I ever round Cape Horn!

I may have done it twice on a technicality - does flying from Stanley to Rothera and back to Punta Arenas count?
