We all see lots of wet weather gear out there. Musto. Helly. Henry Lloyd. Compass. But which is best? Yes I've read the reviews!! But what actully makes a good set of oilles.

This prompted me to think about making my own.

Black bin liners and tin foil!?

Come on guys... what do you think?

I nearly changed from Musto to Henri Llyod last year, but after much dithering and examining the clothe and build quality I stayed with Musto Oceans. Very happy with them.

Must admit I'm killing the trousers rolling around the deck whilst racing, but in all everything is holding together nicely.

Value for money, the JAG suit takes a lot of beating

IMHO the only thing that lets it down is not having ann integral harness.

Five years ago when looking at buying our own foul weather gear at the SIBS I noticed the material used by Musto was the very same that was used by XM (Ocean). So bought the XM at half the price.

Watching this one with interest -

No one could accuse me of being a creature of fashion - been wearing the same model Barbour on land for 30 years - so looking for something very tough and durable rather than something that looks cool. Almost settled on Guy Cotten Rasbras commercial fishing gear (good prices here ) on the basis that the job of the outer layer is largely to keep water gettting to the inner layers

Guy Cotten or similar Bib and Brace and smock or jacket - absolutely waterproof and windproof - not breathable, but such is life they will only take a short while to dry inside when hung up.

Buy a cheap pair of Musto for swanking with the chaps onshore

Not sure about brands etc. But, I bought Gill - very happy with it except for the complete pantomine I have to go through the take a pee! Wish I'd bought something easier to ... you know .... find things in!

I don't need and can't afford anything swanky so use lightweight breathable bib and brace plus jacket from workwear source. Made from something called flexothane. Has worked great so far. It's bright yellow but who cares?

I cheated

They are almost all made in China.

Having got to know some of the brethren of the "Tianjin Mafia" in the Xiu Shui market quite well, when I was living I Beijing, (there are Chinese equivalents for, "It just fell of the back of a truck, guv", "Course it's absolutely genuine!" and "Never mind the quality, feel the width" I bought some Guy Cottens, some Henri-Lloyds, some Helly-Hansens and some Mustos, and gave them an evaluation.

The Musto Offshores, non-breathable, won, so we kitted the boat out with those.

It was some time before I spotted that one pair of yellow trousers bore the legend "RNLI" nicely stitched onto the waistband...

Good enough for the Lifeboat, good enough for me...

Also second the use of the JAG suit. Both Lynn and I have them now. Probably not suitable for Bold Forays into the Roaring Forties, but v.comfortable and dry, and will give your Parsimony Gland a tickle as well.
Previously I have worn the proofing out on my last set of Lilac Henri Lloyds, which I cherish deeply, and wont throw away.

I should have thought that some Spun Tarred Oakum would have proved ideal. Very nautical too!

Just make sure she leaves plenty of room in the nether regions or you may experience Chafe.
