This probably isn't the first mention of this subject, and although my boat seems not to suffer from the problem, our fruit-cage does, or did. Here's the answer:- fold an area of thick black polythene into a triangular cushion shape measuring about 30cm on each side. stick onto it two white eyes made from bostik tape or similar. These should be lozenge-shaped, about 25mm long, with a black pupil slit(vertical, like typical predator) of felt tip marker. Suspend by thread from convenient point, and lo! Not a bird in sight. Looks quite menacing. Possibly would work also if made pyramid-shaped with eyes on each facet(?) and simply set onto cabin-top. Hope it's not that frightening that birds bowels are loosened though.
Cheers Tony G.

On the other hand I have an electric fence that runs off torch batteries. It's very efective with Harry so expect it would flatten a sea gull!!

I've seen lots of owls on boats, doesn't seem to stop em'. Maybe this will, if it works, it will be the saviour of many a boat owner.

Talking of owls, our's worked and kept away most of the seabirds, but between the hours of Friday 11pm and Saturday 5:30pm 27th and 28th June, someone stole our owl!!! When we arrived at the boat (it's on a mooring) the rear cover was not on properly and we didn't immediately notice the missing owl til later yesterday evening. If anyone is offered an owl in the Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland area please contact me asap. The owl goes by the name of "Auwlie".

I'm not joking...

Prestart engine heater for 1 minute then turn key. Repeat for 2nd engine. Drop mooring ropes and push forward on morse gear controls. Push forward on throttle levers and away she goes. Use helm to turn port and starboard to avoid other boats...

Why not just do your part in reducing the seagull population?

Take a long piece of thin string. Tie a piece of bacon rind on one end and the other end to the top of the mast attached to a halyard. Get under way so it flies out astern. One seagull will swallow it and promptly eject the rind at the other end. Another seagull will swallow it and so on until you have a squadron of gulls following in line ahead, all flapping madly!!! What you do with them then is your problem!!!
