When tensioning shrouds, tie a long, light line to the spanner and make it off at the bottom of the mast. It'll reach all the bottlescrews, but not the seabed.

I find placing a slice of cheese between 2 slices of bread and a little butter makes a handy snack when out sailing. I call this Trevor's cheese and bread snack.

Don't take any notice of so-called "tips" from other people, especially on internet forums. It's probably all rubbish, and spoils your own fun in discovering new ways of self-inflicting pain and spending money.

Or always leave boat keys in car or, as I do now, hide a spare set alongside the car jack for when you do leave the main set at home.

Or get a set of identical 'keyed alike' padlocks for main hatch, cockpit lockers, anchor locker etc. As you get 2 keys with every lock and they are all the same you can have a boat key on your car keys, house keys, in fact all over the place and it didn't cost you a bean extra!

[/ QUOTE ] If you do make sure youv'e always got a torch eg a little LED one for the times it is too dark to read the numbers on the lock.

I tried that onto a belt loop. I always used to have my light meter attached like that. It seems to get in the way on the boat as you can't put it down and nip off to the other side or swap for pliers etc. Perhaps it's just me.

Try not to fall in the water. It can be damned inconvenient.

Try to keep the boat the right way up, you'll find your day goes much more smoothly.

Do not forget to tighten up outboard clamps, especially if you have a heart condition.

Do not try and remove sea-snakes from your saloon in the dark.

MOBO's have patio doors etc.

It doesn't look right with a padlock on it!

I can't do much about the stern lines, but at least I'm there to grab them if they make an escape bid, and if they do get loose, as long as I'm going forwards, they'll stream away from the prop. A long bow line's in just the right place for the prop to grab it if it gets loose

Forbsie, I am afraid that my boat came with the patio doors already installed.

At least I don't have to stand on the roof like LakeSailor's illustration.

Do you find your nose gets sunburned when sailing on hot summer days? A great tip to prevent that without creams and hats -

If its rough and the deck crew are wanting cups of tea or soup, then getting getting the hot drinks up the companionway without spilling them can be rather difficult.


So tell the deck crew to [--word removed--] off
