Forum name and boat name

When I registered the name of my boat, I chose several names being Distantshaws , distantshaws 2 and distantshaws 3

As my name was a unique spelling I first choice was allowed as its based on my surname

Boat name is Crazy Diamond and it is on the Part 1 register as such. It was named that when we bought it and initial thoughts were that it would have to go until I learned of the Pink Floyd reference (Syd Barret) and found a copy of ‘Wish you were here’ aboard. Can’t believe it passed me by previously and it is now one of my favourite albums and the name stayed. Even had a plaque made to put on a bulkhead that helpfully concealed some fading and holes where a previous owner had mounted an awful (in my eyes) CD shelf. Not unusual for the name to be a conversation starter and it is great on VHF - no mistaking it or having to repeat or spell it out! 😁

The plaque and another piece I had made up to cover more poor installation of switches and the original hole for the stereo as we moved it and installed the Fusion so that it would be above the TV (that is what the mount is for):

I've just had a read. I think this fails the test for 'preventing confusion'.

A vessel name that includes a place, like "of Southampton," is part of the vessel's unique legal name and implies a connection to that location.

The rules expressly prohibit any name that could be "calculated to deceive or likely to confuse".

Having a name that specifies one port while officially being registered in another creates exactly this kind of confusion, so that IMHO is why it would not be allowed for Part 1.

Other interpretations welcome.
Rafiki is Rafiki of Portsmouth officially.

We had the following boats named “Crazy Diamomd”

Viking 20 - 1996
Nimbus 3003 - 1997 to 2002
Fairline Targa 39 - 2002 to 2004
Nauticat 39 - 2004 to 2020

We saw your Crazy Diamond when she was at Dunstaffnage out on the hard.

A fabulous piece of music but ultimately it’s very sad, Though surely Floyd produced their best music after Syd’s time.

What does Tom Jones have to do with it.

Yes, the previous owner cruised her up to Scotland from the south coast and I think spent a season or two up there - we have receipts for some service work at Dunstaffnage with the boat’s papers.

As you say, a fabulous piece of music but what happened with Syd was very sad.
.

Crazy Diamond absolutely summed him up.

Back on the thread:
We had a 13ft runabout, navy blue as it happens, that I used for a bit of fishing. My daughter's then boyfriend came up with the name - Fishful Thinking. Which given my angling skills was the perfect name.

That's right; the "of xxx" bit must be the actual port of registry, for example you can say "Blue Shadow of Brixham" and registry port must be Brixham.
That's not correct SF. The word following "of" can be anything.

I don't think there is any confusion of the type you describe above - indeed the inverse can be argued. I have owned 3 boats on Part 1 with a town name following the "of" that was not the port of registry.

Thanks for clearing that up - I only heard it from a broker and we know all about brokers!!.

My previous boat was "Jennywren of Southampton" and registered on the Part 1 under the port of Southampton.
So that didn't really test SF's comment.
But we kept the name when we sold her.
When we registered our current boat, Jennywren (no of) was available but we still used Southampton as the port of registration.

Yup I had two "Braveheart of Lymington" years ago, one reg in Southampton and one in London. Then I had Braveheart of Antibes, reg in London. All on UK Part 1 registry.
