Forum moderation - proactive vs. on demand

I take your point, and of course you are entitled to express an opinion - as is everone else here!
As posted elsewhere in this thread, The Lounge is for non-boaty threads but it is a relatively recent addition to the Fora, before that Scuttlebutt was the repository for all sorts of stuff - to the extent that The Lounge was thought to be necessary (how very true!).
I read and interpret the "rules" for here as "Boaty-ish related" fairly serious-ish, reverent-ish, but hot topics none the less.
The Lounge has none of these. Well, perhaps excepting hot topics. There are some boaty-ish posts there, but only insofar as they're mostly un-serious and irreverent, but not always!

They are all meant to educate, inform and amuse. It is a bit difficult sometimes to get it right. The "older" hands see the blurring in the fora more than the "newbies".

Some posters have said that they find the Lounge a bit scary, which it could seem to be to those of a shy and retiring nature, BUT it never fails to educate, inform and amuse me. Sometimes it infuriates me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Scuttlebutt sometimes infuriates me too, as does Mobo and ALL the others but then I'm a cantankerous old F...! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Read and post in them all. Give your opinion! Fight your corner, but most importantly enjoy!! Even the dust-ups which invariably crop up! But please,please don't take it all too seriously. Life's too short!

Personally I like the banter on here but don't like to get invloved with the rows as a rule. I've only posted on here about 80 times in two years mainly to ask questions. Some poeple on here have made posting a way of life so to them having the forums the way they like it probably is more inportant to them.
 
Perhaps so. But I don't worry too much what other's opinions are. I just don't take a lot of notice.
If someone wishes to get excited about a particular aspect of the forums that's fine by me.
I just carry on as before, If I'm out of order Dan will wake up at some point and do something, but I'm sure he doesn't have either the time or inclination to move threads around just so that they are all tidy and in their own forums.

As has been said many, many times before, they are IPC's forums, and they make the decisions, not the forumites.
 
You could always shorten it to "The Terribly Serious Forum For Humourless Old Farts!"

Earlier on in this thread, I made the following remark.....

I now realise that I made that comment in error and offer my sincere apologies to Mr Baggins, for my faux pas.

I had thought that it was Bill that started the thread, and of course I was mistaken, I should pay more attention.

I have an idea, I think you should all come to the stand at either Earls Court or ExCel do not introduce yourself to each other, sit down and have a boaty discussion, you never know you may grow to like each other!

Then again it may turn into a mass brawl......
