I post as Kioni as that was the name of our first cruising boat when I came on here and I've been on this forum on and off for almost 10 years now under that moniker.

Now she's sold what do I do?

Do I continue to post as Kioni knowing it's all a lie and a pretense?

Do I change my forum name to match our (hopefully-finger-crossed-soon-to-arrive-please-pretty-please) current boat which no-one knows and so lapse into obscurity, losing the link to all those years of witty ripostes and treasured gems of nautical experience I know you've all come to love?

What is the protocol in such circumstances: a new identity or continuance of tradition? Is there a forum name electronic equivalent of a boat renaming ceremony?

whatever suits you best, Kioni is just a handle on here, so no reason to change it. If you like your username to reflect your status, just change it to boatless Kioni or ex-Koini if you really want, then change again when you have a new boat. Or change to a name which is independent of your boat. Just bear in mind, everytime you change your name, loads of people who look at a thread and see 'Kioni' posting, will know you and your posting habits, and that will change, and only a few will look at the number of posts made, and the context, and make the connection. Kioni is a sort of trademark you have, and you might lose that until people become used to your new username(s)

Some of us have changed name with boat as it is easier to wave at a boat name floating by, especially one as conspicuous as Saguday (or Kioni).
I still have Morgana in my phone as NAS.
My previous was Second Chance.
FlipperK6354 is now Karouise.....
Sixpence was Trevera and several others
colmce changed his as soon as he bought a boat, and is now known as Vara.
Many others too.

Put a signature line at the bottom giving people a clue.

Entirely up to you.

i used shmoo (all lowercase and no 'c') before I realized about the convention to use the boatname.

Still, I nearly always use it when I can. We were going to rename the boat to match but laziness got the better of us.

Same here! I joined a chat room years ago and as my nickname is Lil or Lily I used ChattingLil. I then kept it for all non-serious web comms and email accounts to filter out the junk. When I joined YBW I didn't even think of using a more apt name. ChattingLil just sticks with me now regardless of the purpose.

Who are you anyway?

Why do you keep following me?

Just leave me alone will you!

:D

I have decided to change, but with a suitable signature to provide a period of continuity and explanation, somewhat like Doctor Who going through one of his many transmogrifications.

I will however wait until our long-missed-and-dearly-beloved marine member of the family arrives, much delayed, into hallowed British waters hopefully in mid July
