formica adhesive

two winters ago i completely refurbished my galley.i replaced the formica work top surface using contact adhesive and then rebuilt cupboards etc on top. a major undertaking including routing and finishing all edges. the edge around the sink has now lifted due to water ingress. the last thing i want to do is to take the whole thing to pieces and start again. can anyone suggest which adhesive i could use to refasten the edge of the formica around the sink given that i can only lift the edge of the formica a little way to get the surfaces clean and apply the adhesive. an additional problem could be getting the plywood base completely dry so a water based adhesive could be preferable if a strong enough one exists. i have scoured the web for an answer but adhesive chemistry is beyond me

Formica adhesive

The adhesive usually recommended was Evostik a petroleum based contact adhesive.
I suggest that using a syringe,you might get away with epoxy resin,after drying with a heat gun where it is damp .
Another is the spray adhesive for carpets, in an aerosol can which also works as a contact glue and dries very quickly;however there may be some fumes ,so plenty of ventilation when applying ,but no smell when dry. If you can apply some pressure to the lifting areas that helps.

When you say the edge, I guess you referring to the edge of the top adjacent to the sink. If so, I trick I always use when dealing with sink edges or anywhere where there's more than just a little moisture, is to bed the edge down with sikaflex. Admittedly I bond the remainder with Dunlop Thixofix but leave about an inch for the sikaflex. In your case, depending on how far you can lift the laminate, this will do the job even if the plywood is a little damp because sikaflex is moisture curing. Smear some on a pallet knife or something similar and once you've applied it press down to exude the excess. You can then use a bit of ply thats slightly larger than the sink aperture and put something heavy on it till cured.

B&Q, Wilkinsons etc., stock tins of water-based Evostick adhesive, but imho it's rubbish compared with the usual petrol-based stuff. Recommend you thoroughly dry out the wood and use regular Evostick.

Or - Fernox LS-X from Wickes or B&Q - it's one of those rare forms of silicone rubber which cures in the presence of water.

I think that Polyeurathane wood glue would be ok, as this needs water present to cure. It is supperb on wood, though perhaps a small trial should be undertaken first.

I would use a polyurethane wood glue. I have used it for anywhere that may get wet. The damp/wet surface would also be no problem as it uses moisture to cure.

When worktops are professionally laminated in the factory the glue/adhesive used is PVA followed by heat and pressure. (And this includes post-formed worktops!) I don't mean heated in an oven but clamped and warmed. PVA is water based until cured so a good one might be your answer
