forged notes

Given that banks can bounce cheques up to 2 weeks after deposit and that they can (and often do) accept Drafts/Building society cheques and then decide days after the event that they are fraudulent, does anyone know if they have a similar "get out clause" with regard to dud notes?

Not DAYS for bank drafts, months. They can bounce months later, particularly overseas ones. Now a very unsafe method of payment

Some feedback on my original post about accepting notes that may turn out to be counterfeit:-

I accepted used notes for the sale of my old car and when I paid this into my bank account they put the cash straight into a sealed plastic envelope with my name on (apparently standard practice for more than £1000 cash-money laundering checks I suppose).

When I queried whether the bank offered the facility to check cash as genuine at the point of paying in to the bank I was informed that they did not offer this service and that if the cash subsequently turned out to be counterfeit then I would suffer the loss - so much for using the bank to identify counterfeit notes as protection for yourself - it seems the bank only wishes to protect itself not help its customers!

Theft Act

Theft - dishonestly ; appropriates; property ;belonging to another ;with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it ; (as far as I remember)
Each word / phrase has been the subject of lengthy legal debate / case law etc. when property is 'handed over' has it been dishonestly; appropriated; if the purchaser is unaware that the money is counterfeit then there is no dishonesty, so : no offence, the law on deception is even more of a minefield of legal discussion. When property is 'handed over it usually involves some deception. Electronic transfer seems the way to go, and whenever I have taken a cheque my receipt states ownership passes when the funds enter my account, don't know how the legal boys/girls would view it .

Yet another bit of the great British economy goes down the toilet

Where are we going when even our currency, which has pretty poor standing along side other countries, is not only worth nothing very much, a fair amount is fraudaulent too? How long before out wheel barrows are stolen in preference to the currency that we take to the bank, in them? I would be very wary if I should think to say that it can never happen here.
