SHMBO is good at languages but difficult to know whether to hail passing vessel in Dutch or French - we get confused with vertical and horizontal versions of red, white and blue, not to mention occasional Ukrainian vessel in the Med.
Anyone know where to get small aide-memoire to have on chart table. Can't remember seeing such in boating catalogues

With a Belgian boat English may be safest anyway.

Just remember that the Dutch are frugal people and so they designed their flag in such a way that when the end gets tatty they can just lop a centimeter or two off it! The French can't do that with their flag.

When we were kids watching French Foreign Legion films we used to sing some thing about "Blue to the mast true to the mast" ie French blue next to mast, Dutch blue horizontal.

Sorry for delay in replying, just got back from work. (When boss away I can scan forums there). Wow, what a websight: FOTW (Flags of the World):34,00 pages and 64,00 images of flags. We forumites are sometimes a tad nerdish, but when it comes to vexillology they have no equals. Have just exhausted my colour printer cartridges printing off one sheet.
Vexillologically yours, Amari

I originally learnt the difference by
H for Holland - Horizontal
F for French - Fertical (excuse the mispelling but the sense is there) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But then how do you tell the difference betreen Italy and Ireland?

get the book out I suppose!!

remember my Dad telling when I was confused he used to say,"For France the flag should be Blue to the Mast Red last" easy peasy /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Italy is Green/Black/Red vertical with Shield & crown in Black. Ireland is what ever it is.

Ireland would be Green/White/Orange with green at the hoist.

Re: Green, white and GOLD!!!!

Actually the national flag is Green / White / Red.

The maritime ensign has a shield on the central white stripe that incorporates the emblems of the old four maritime states that existed before the unification of Italy.
