Nothing to do with boats but I know that many of you are aware of the costs in Foreign Exchange.
I need to transfer a largish sum to the US to fund a house purchase. Now I feel certain that messers Barclays, Nationwide etc. will grab my money with glee, and take a sizeable chunk for themselves, before getting said cash to its destination. So what is the best way to move money to the US?

You will probably get the best deal from one of the online specialist FX companies, let google be your chum.

The market seems quite fluid so last weeks best deal may not be so good this week for big sums

try this operation

usual farrago of anti-laundering requirements, so unless you're a UK resident, with an established bank account you'll be locked out.

Thanks for that Charles, If I can do it through them they appear to be able to give me a substantially better deal than the banks!

Hi

same dillem I had before transfering the purchase price of our boat to Germany..

I think you have already sussed that the banks are not your friend with regards to international transfers, even when they say "no transfer fees" the rate you will get will be, as you say, substantially poorer than one of the specialist currency firms.

I used 'Currency UK' in Dec 2010 and was very happy with the service and exchange rate, I made a couple of mistakes on the form, being a novice to international finance ha ha...... and it caused no delays or problems as they were happy to help sort it out and were pleasant as they did so..

a very helpful chap named Marco.

you need to register with them for money lending regs, this in itself is a simple process.

I will be using them again for transfering regular sums in the future.

(We have no reason to recommend these guys except as genuinely pleased customers)

good luck
