Hi

I am looking at buying a 35 to 45 foot older diesel boat and am looking for informaiton on how to date engines.

One boat I am looking at is a Broom Ocean 37 with 2 x Ford Sabre engines.
The owner has listed the boat as a mid 80s with 200HP engines. But they are the 150HP 6 Cylinder (turbo) Diesels from what I can see. Can anyone help with further information on these motors.

Model on plate is 2704ET
Date/SN is: s.862360
Build NO is: 99-33A/250/331/000 8
Block: A
HD: D
RPM: 2400
Capacity:360-C1
Fuel Sys: AC

There is an old manual on the boat that indicates it is a 150HP turbo. But I need to know when they were built and a bit on the reliability and ease of fixing. I am good with Petrol motors as I have been building bikes and cars all my life. But not so knowledge with Diesel.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks.
Danny.

Ford marinised diesels type 2704ET from this period are as you suggest 150 h.p. This is a non intercooled turbo charged variant. When the intercooler was added they became 2704ETI and developed 180 h.p. Further tuning took them to 210 h.p. and all had raw water gearbox and engine oil cooling. However, later engines developed 212 h.p. but had fresh water engine oil cooling.

I will have to check but your Date/SN looks like a block casting number.!!
About this time the original Dorset block was replaced by the Dover, and as far as I'm aware continued until Ford Sabre production ceased.

As for Lehman, sorry I know very little apart from observing that most blocks were inclined at approx. 45 degs. and confirmed by literature I have.

I hope this helps you a little!

You my friend are a legend. Exactly the information I was looking for.

Being fairly mechanically savy and able to get custom stainless pipes and heat exchangers made I might look into upgrading this motor if I buy the boat.

It is in a late 70s early 80s Broom Trans Ocean 37 that is here in Australia. It was partially sunk and the owner has given up on trying to fix everything. If I can pick it up cheap enough I will have to post a few pics as I do each upgrade and retrofit.
It is very late 70s fit out now.

Would anyone know much about the gearboxes and any ratios on these setups? Can supply pictures via email if required.

Dan,

I've just checked and this serial number is a Dorset series which was built in January 1973 according to my records which are approximate. Based on the build number it is a 2704ET built specifically for the mariniser market and was not built with any unusual options that would make it any more difficult to source parts for, although Dorsets in general are becoming more difficult to get parts for due to their age.
The 2704ET was rated at a maximum output of 118kW (158hp) at 2400rpm.
The service and parts manuals for this engine are available as a free download on our web site, but if you have any problems with that then just PM me and I'll send them to you direct.
Please note that our parts manual is only relevant to the Mermaid specific marinisation parts rather than Sabre, but we may be able to advise on Sabre specific parts. For this it would be best to contact Stephen Atkins at our Poole office.
I hope this will help.
Best of luck
Jon
