Came across a 38ft semi displacement trawler yacht with a pair of these dating back to 1987. Are they any good/ what is the horsepower? Broker doesn't state hp, engine hrs or anything remotely useful except 'regularly serviced'..PIcs show a tidy clean engine but no idea when the pics were actually taken.

Are they turbo'd and intercooled? do you have any pictures? Ours are a lot older than yours, and are still going strong, a simple easy to fix engine, no electronic gizmos to worry about, smoke like factory chimneys on start up but soon clean up when under load and up to temperature.

ours are 180 hp, but there are variants starting at 120, 150, 212. all using a 5995 cc, some are even kicking out 275, but are on a bigger block, others on here will no doubt assist re these.

Thanks, I just emailed the broker again asking what hp as this SHOULD surely have been basic information along with eng hours ( hour meters are listed ) I like the sound of simple non -electronic.

PS added BTW this is on a a UK based boat based on the Severn.

In that period Sabres were a major player using Ford base engines built in Dagenham ( I worked on installing the machining line for them in the late 1960's!). Marinised by a family firm in Ferndown. As omega says, available in a range of HPs from naturally aspirated to turbo and intercooled within an inch of their lives. suspect the one you are looking at will be lightly turboed and around 180hp.

If in good condition should be fine, but like many older engines it is worth investigating spares. After Dagenham was switched to mainly small engines, the bigger ones went to Turkey and Brazil with the same basic design, but not sure how interchangeable later components are.

THanks Tranona. The boat looksnice but might be stuck in a River Severn time warp, it has been for sale some time but has just changed brokers after 'being withdrawn from sale'. The first showed no interest in answering my emailed questions and the current one ( the boat moved marinas in between) has also so far not bothered to reply to my emails either. Maybe the owner doesn't really want to sell, because I rang the first marina office who said it was withdrawn and was related to some home or land deal the owner was involved in. I can't play silly games from 4,000 miles and a 4 or 5 hour time difference away so maybe I just give up on it. As a side issue we are going to need a storage place ( Poole would be perfect) to ship stuff to into for storage until we have got back and bought a boat and/or rented a place to stay. Any ideas if such exist in Poole that would accept a palletised shipment without us being there to sign it in? We might have to hold our stuff in storage this side then only ship once we are 'home' to get round it. So many little problems, so few answers.. We might rent a small flat in Poole or somewhere to start with so we can establish a resident address for bus passes etc. our UK expat mail place is in Wales and their bus passes don't work on the civilised side of the bridge even if we could get a utility bill there in our name which we cannot.

If you google domestic storage poole Dorset you will get a choice of 3 or 4 storage outfits. The two big ones are either the one at Fleetsbridge (Big Yellow), behind B&Q and the other at the top of Wallisdown Road opposite the old Mountbatten Arms (now a chain steakhouse!).

Suggest you contact them direct. Happy to liaise with delivery if they accept direct shipments. Either is less than 10 minutes from home.

Many thanks, I will look at both. isn't that what used to be a Beefeater cafe?

Is it not the case that for the high power outputs a lot of Ford bits were replaced with higher duty ones and those are generally unobtainable?
