I have a Freeman 33 fitted With 150 Ford Sabre Diesels.
Fitted to the inlet manifolds is a device which looks as though an electrical feed and diesel supply can be added.
I am informed that this is an optional cold start device which pre-heats the air rather than than using the normal excess fuel button on the pump.

Has anyone had experience of this setup?

Thanks

Yea - it ignites a small amount of diesel in the inlet - if it's connected. There should also be an overfuelling button on the injector pump by the operating lever. Push this in & you get extra fuel for a cold start. It auto resets when you rev up. But in my experience, these engines never need either if they & the batteries are OK.

The device is probably a Lucas "Thermostart" and unless the diesel supply is fitted will not work. It is common on 80s direct injection engines, have one on my old JCB (perkins 236) to work needs holding key to heat position for 15-20 secs then as soon as you crank engine you can usually hear the diesel ignite with a "Whoooomf" sort of noise. Have never had any trouble with mine and its 18yrs old, works very well as long as battery is good. Really its a more sophisticated version of getting your mate to hold a lighted rag in the air intake while you crank the starter! Oh the good old days . Memories of 1963
