Losing a lot of oil from gearbox. It just disappears.Might be going through exhaust from cooling system. No apparent leak aroung gearbox.Had to remove some of cooling apparatus recently to replace impeller. Also water had got into gear box through dip stick during extended lay up.Am going to check exhaust emmissions for oil.
Any suggestions welcome.

Hi - I'd recommend you call the Mermaid office at Poole on 01202 677776 and speak to Richard who will be able to give you some advice.
Best regards
Jon

does the gear box have an oil cooler fitted.

This must be the first thing to look at if there is not any oil lost else where. Usually however the water leaks in as well

Are you sure the water got in through the dipstick, and not from the oil cooler? I usually collect the outlet water in a bucket, oil film can still be quite difficult to see until you throw it on a dark surface, then easily visible. In an emergency you can connect the oil cooler pipes together to bypass it, but keep the revs down. Also if you take the oil pipes off the cooler (and connect them together so you can run the engine) you should get water coming out. Replace the pipestack and O rings.
Otherwise next is the output shaft oil seal, last resort would be input oil seal but in that case the lost oil will be in the flywheel housing. My engine has a drain plug under there, I think you might be able to see oil if you remove the starter motor, it would be flung around a bit.
