Ford dorset 6 cylinder injector pump question

Can anyone tell what the lump on top of this pump does? it has a plastic pipe to the inlet manifold.
It's a cav minimec.

There is a hose from the inlet manifold to the mechanical injection pump of my 12cyl Man engines. The purpose of this hose is to link turbopressure to the IP. If the hose is not in place, the IP is adjusted to go not above approx 1500 rpm

I assumed aneroid of some sort but these are normally aspirated engines so should have very little vacuum to register, that's what threw me.

They govern the governor and prevent excess over fueling, and reduce smoke, but they never made any difference on ours. LOL dOES YOURS SMOKE ON START UP

It's not mine, I'm on volvos, it's just one I looked at to diagnose a problem (a big one) to see the pipe in question molten and 2 head bolts missing, it's been run fairly hard with one of them missing for over a year so I dread to think what lurks when the head comes off.
My volvos however do smoke on startup, in fact I get ducks turning blue and sinking below the water and badgers rolling from hedgerows gasping for air along with the distant sound of fire engines rushing to the scene to see whats on fire......

The item was known as a "Boost Control Unit" does what it says.

Cheers guys, had it been a turbo engine I'd have guessed straight off, I guess that pump was also used on turbo'd lumps.

Brilliant! Took our 6 month old out on the boat for the first time last weekend - put him on the flybridge on startup for that exact reason! 30 year old Volvo smoke machines...

Brill. We started taking our on the boat from day one, but only went under way as he approached 3 years old.

I started up and ran my old Perkins 6.354's one winter day, creating a nuclear winter of smoke, so much so that the fire alarm went off in the mobile phone base station shed on the quay nearby. I shut down, put the cover on and disappeared quick. A BT van and fire engine were pulling into the yard as I left. Ooops.
