Approx 85hp, circa 1995.
Anyone any experience of these engines and parts availability?

Surely 1995 is later Dover block?

If timing cover pressed steel = Dorset = Lots of smoke, poor spares now.

If timing cover cast aluminium = Dover = better but still a smokey old thing by modern standards.

Thanks both.
BB, I'll check on that, from the bit of Googling I did it does seem as if the Dorset is too old for a 95 boat.
It's only in an old Colvic seaworker, so a plodder is fine, but don't want something that's been repowered with an older engine.

Interested to now why? If it's reliable why not ? Cant comment on smoke problems as mine has done less than 3000Hrs in
40 years :)

Had the Dover 4.2L version in an ex naval rib. Engine was turbo'd for the RN and then uprated by a previous owner to 200hp by Mermaid Marine with Dyno cert to prove it. Needed to be used carefully generating this amount of power but shows that the non turbo version is quite a strong lump. Ford used it for ever in tractors and lorries etc so spares are available cheaply if you are prepared to shop around. Very easy to work on as its such a simple lump.

Sounds promising then, thanks for the info :)

You're probably right, no reason to, really. Just seems a bit pointless when I could look around for one with a later engine in it I suppose? I'll do a bit more research.

You're not changing the Turbo 36 already are you Murv ? :)

Good God no! I'm really missing not having a fishing boat and I have an unused mooring just around the corner from home. So, just been browsing the classifieds to see what's out there, and cheap!
The ideal would be a Colvic seaworker with a TAMD61A in it... I can dream!!

The old Ford will be a lot less trouble in the long run, spares are plentiful should you ever need any, and even you can fix it, LOL Is the 36 too small to fish from?

You make a strong case!
No, it's not really too small to fish from, there's a bit of room on the aft deck but I'm always worrying about swinging a lead through one of the windows or cracking the gel coat and I have to try and keep it clean. It also uses a bit too much fuel to use it too often for fishing.
The mooring I've got for a fishing boat is 5 minutes from home and right on the doorstep of the open sea whereas the 36 is moored upriver 90 minutes away from where you can even start.

Thanks both.

Not at all unusual for Colvic hulls to be fitted second hand engines and the 2712 with 72 hp continuous is a nice match. Unlike turbocharged versions of Dover N/A engines are ok for parts.

However there is one watch out....Simms pump on Dover is not lube fed from the engine and it is not uncommon when being serviced for this to be overlooked. Lately I have encountered cases where due to lack of lube servicing over the years the injector pump cam has become worn. Lucas Delphi have phased out replacement camshafts for all old Simms Minimec and Majormec fuel pumps.

Thanks for that, very good to know. From the googling I did, it does seem that very few people are aware of the need for a lubricant change in the Simms pump.
The two boats I had my eye on have sold despite only being listed for a couple of weeks but I will keep on looking.

Surprised to hear that about lube top-up on the Minimec. I do mine regularly but must say with the donk mounted at 45 degrees its a tad difficult pouring in the oil :)
For anyone searching these threads in the future I understand Lancing Marine ( https://www.lancingmarine.com/) have a good shelf stock of Minimec & Majormec pumps.

If Lancing still using their old pump shop you can keep them. 2712 4 cylinder pump £795 plus £250 core exchange for a pump made up out of mainly second hand parts for a an engine worth say £500/£700...........Marine money pit.

Recent experience ??? Would be interested if you could point me in the direction of where you can get a 2712 for 700 quid,

It is a matter of fact that cams are NLA so any Simms pump sold as reconditioned will be a mish mash of bits from other second hand pumps.

No export market for 2712 base engines so only value is in the marinisation parts if they are in good order may sell on Ebay which is where the £500/£700 comes from. People have become wise to the fact that old engines are potential money pits

Thanks for that. Personally I would't care if parts were a mish mash as long as it worked with a reasonable service life.
