Ford 2711E Dorset engine

I have a 1998 boat with a mermaid mariner 135 HP non turbo engine which does all I need it to with little or no smoke . It is based on the same engine what in anyone's opinion are its pros and cons as I'm keen to learn

They all smoke on start up!

Pro, it drives the yotties away

Con, the radar has to be switched on.

No smoke when under load

Pro, the yotties cannot point you out to the "greenies"
Con, they upset a lot of people because they keep on going 30 years plus.

Maintenance

Pro, Parts are cheap as chips.

Con Internals are getting scarce.

and finally you need not go to a "specialist" in order to keep it running.

chewing gum and string will do. Or in our case two pieces of string LOL

Gawd give me strength...............1998 i.e Dover N/A motor, does not smoke because it is;

a) A Dover

b) It has 16:1 N/A pistons.

My concerns related to high output Sabre ratings, Mermaid Mariner is the 6.2 liter parent bore block with 115mm stroke producing not quite 22 hp per liter.

Parts plentyful and still inexpensive. How long before you give up boating?? It will last longer than that.

So, if opportunity arose, and i wanted more performance, what would you fit...
Yanmars, i havent heard anyone giving much abuse to.... 6ly....?

Yanmar 6LYA2 was a good motor in its time, gone now, 370 rating was a lovely engine and they dropped the ball big time with the Tier II 6LYA3, electronic motor which still smokes on start up!!! Eyewatering parts prices, most simple of fuel pump repair is over £4K........

Cummins QSB or Volvo D Series are current benchmarks, possibly IVECO NEF, however their ratings games and screwy electronics are a bit of nausia, may be sorted now.

Always Cummins B Series ReCon mechanical motors 210 to 370, built from new components in an engine reconditioning plant to get around emissions legislation.

Personally I prefer electronic motors.
