Could any members recommend breakers yards for ford trucks in UK.
I have just purchased boat with 2711E industrial engine which has been poorly marinised (south East Asia)

I'm looking for the helical gear wheel that bolts to the spindle of the Jabsco/Johnston raw water pump.

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks

That gear on a lorry drives the air accumilator for the brakes. You should find one at a commercial vehicle breakers easily enough. Or a complete new pump from jabsco.

Thank you for the speedy reply omega2, I live in Phuket so was hoping to order online or tel to place order. I have a friend who travels frequently between UK and Thailand to bring the part out to me.

tertim,

You would be better off making enqiries with Hendy Lennox Power Products Ltd,
School Lane
Chandler's Ford
Eastleigh
Hampshire
SO53 4LY

They are in the process of clearing out their stock of Dorset/Dover stuff as the Turkish Otosan Dovertec production had now ended.

You want the gear for the 2401 Jabsco pump.

Remember the Dorset was was all washed up in the very early 80's and due to lack of export market after Turkey introduced a restrictive tariff around 1997 they were generally weighed in as heavy metal.

Even properly Marinised Dorset motors by Lehman, Sabre and Mermaid are worth more to break up for the marine hang on bits and rest goes in the iron.

Mt boat has 330 sabres, not sure which ford derivative they are, but if they are getting older in the tooth is it wise to buy spares now.... What tends to break? My understanding was they were reliable enough...

Thank you latestarter1 I will give them a call tomorrow.

Bank holiday for us tomorrow...

Hendy Lennox are Ford Power products distributor, suspect Lancing originally purchased gears from Hendy, although Hendy are having a clear out of Dover stuff, Dorset bits may have already gone. You will note that Dorset is a helical gear unlike Dover which is straight cut.

Dover is OK up to 275 rating, any rating above that forget it, special 14.7 pistons long gone. CAT took over Sabre and went though stores like Atilla the Hun and literally everything went to the scrap man, heat exchanger cores, bodies, cams pistons the lot.

Dorset, Sabre stopped supporting it even before the CAT take-over, rebuilds and parts enquires were quietly passed to Mermaid for support, now Cyril at Mermaid has retired. Some piston part #'s still available but over £300 each!

One of the major issues are the steel main bearing caps Sabre used on higher raings, they do fret and they have not been available for about ten years.

I do not remember a 330 Dover rating, it was the 320L in my days.

Dorset has been out of production for a MINIMUM of 32 years and you certainly know if you have one............Smoke! Think it is time for Dorsets to be put out to pasture.

Sadly it has to be remembered that any of the high ratings with special pistons are scrap if they overheat and pick up a piston.

Ours keep on smoking, also got another pair in the shed, they refuse to surrender. WILL "Pasturise" when you "latestarter" come up with something better for £50 each LOL

So im screwed for spares then.
Thats a bit of a pisser.... Best save my pennies for some d6 430 volvos
Should get another thirty years out of these yet :)

no keep the Fords!! vilvoes are even worse.

On a serious note whilst having a dislike of Volvo engines long term parts support is always there, even for very old engines. Same goes for CAT and Cummins. However all manufacturers calculate pricing on parts turns on the shelf so for a 30+ year old motor some parts can have breathtaking prices.

The key guys who originally did the Ford Dorset back in 1963/65 are dead and gone, many had worked on the even earlier Dagenham D engine!. Dorset lasted from 1965 to late 1980, many of the first Dovers were Dover/Dorset hybrids as we had lube oil control issues with Dover. Also remember that Dorset was low volume hand assembled engine built by a team of two on a moving track with pretty sloppy tolerances. In Dover we used far higher level of automation. One component which did not require radical alteration was the crank, the dimentions were dictated by corporate standards engineers at Dearborn in the U.S. When we compared our crank with that of a Perkins 6.354, that looked like a bent paper clip.

Smoke, yes I hate start up smoke regardless of engine colour, stink stays on your clothes all day. Taken as a big joke by some boaters.

If I had my way I would lobby EC to outlaw Dorset on envionmental grounds and mandate replacement with the Dover unit, which is a far superior engine. Dovertec engine is now only just ending in Turkey on many of the American and British machine tools we commissioned at Dagenham in the late 70's, not a bad production run at all!

Why does this subject get to me??????? As a watch out for the many boaters, there are still many quality vessels out there with high output Sabres. In the last few years I have looked a number of vesels two nice Nelsons and a Supermarine Swordfish spring to mind all bighted with high output Sabres of the mid 80's. One Nelson was commisioned by the owner and maintained to a super standard, suddenly his pride and joy was relegated to a re-power project when he wanted to sell it. The other Nelson I looked at with 370's broker was adamant that there were no support issues, when potential buyer said he was considering purchase as a re-power, then it turned out that owner had a spare swing engine in his garage to cover this eventuality. Turned out that the 'insurance' motor in the owners garage was one of a pair we had taken out of a Supermarine Swordfish and replaced with Yanmar 6LY's.

I would not want to see anybody here slung under a bus!

Wow, I'm impressed...

I have a 1998 boat with a mermaid mariner 135 HP non turbo engine which does all I need it to with little or no smoke . It is based on the same engine what in anyone's opinion are its pros and cons as I'm keen to learn
