Force4 Bosuns Chair. Comments Please.

On the advice of someone who rarely comes down from the top of his mast I have just ordered a climbing harness and two ascenders. He says you can fall out of bosun's chairs but not out of a harness.

You really have to try it. It looks a bit like mine which bears the name Compass. I have probably made around 1000 ascents up our 15 foot MastaClimba demo mast plus numerous others up 40 footers.

It is uncomfortable mainly by virtue of the short seat.

It depends on how you intend to use it. If you are going to be hoisted up the mast, then you are seated for most of the time.

If you are going to climb the mast using it, with a Topclimber, Prussics (or indeed, a MastaClimba!), then you will often be erect. This is when you slide forwards out of the seat and regaining it can be uncomfortable especially for gentlemen (if you know what I mean!).

If you have a climbing centre nearby preferably with a wall, try some harnesses.

If you opt for a chair, choose one with a solid seat and that gives adequate length for your backside.

Whatever choice you make, wear a safety harness separately tethered and preferably under you control. Your life may depend on it.
