For those of you with a degree in rocket science I present

Don't know about the starter motor, but surely the diesel used to run the engine to charge the batteries to replace the amps used by the lights would be domestic?

So by that logic can I claim back the tax on the fuel tht my car uses to run the lights, CD player, aircon etc?

...but what about running lights? Is the diesel used to charge the batteries to replenish the amps used by running lights propulsion, or domestic? The Steaming light presumably is propulsion but running lights under sail?

What about the anchor light?

Doh!

Yes I would have thought so. The Mobos are probably happy with a 60/40 split, however since a yacht sails everywhere (afterall no one uses motoring cones in the solent) perhaps yachties ought to dig there heels in and insist on a 70% domestic / 30% propulsion as a standard. I am aware you can choose to declare the percentages.

Naw - you're all starting from the wrong place. A diesel engine is unlikely to more than 45% efficient so that's 65% already used to heat the calorifier, engine space and the environment - obviously domestic. Then your alternator is about 60amp so that's another 720 watt at say 90% efficiency so about another 5% of the overall. Then there's the eberspacher at about 0.5litres/hr or 25% of my overall fuel consumption

All this makes about 90% domestic and 10% propulsion and even then if you have sails up and no cone the 10% doesn't count!

Reality is likely to be the marina decides and us poor sailor boys can either lump it or leave it.

So WOT HAPPENS when we go Foreign. Oh you have Zee Red Diesel i vill ave 2 fine you /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

what I want to know is how the poor sods at the fueling stations are going to make their books balance at the end of the day??

The pump is going to read say 100 ltrs at 140p per ltr , so £140, and they are going to charge me 60 ltr at 140p and 40ltr at 80p (or so ) . Which would be £116

Going to be fun.

Or ..are they going to say you have to claim it back on your tax return ??

Regards Nick

Cant say I'm impressed by the RYA putting their name to the 60/40 split when they know (and we all know) that its a load of bo**ocks. And what about the civil servants involved? If thats the calibre of decision they make / system they design in an area we know about, just what are they doing when the problem is complicated?

You wanted to know where your taxes were going? Well now you have the answer.
