For the hard of understanding !

Is the RL series AIS compatible? I thought the classic C and E series were the first Raymarine products to do AIS, although I could very easily be wrong. It has been known :D

Also certain that RL Raymarine stuff this ancient cannot display AIS info.
All I really want is a NMEA output to tell my RL80 where I am.

Am a bit mystified where the little magic Quark box will display the AIS information ?
Might well work with newer equipment and is merely a budget substitute for the OM components.

I'm confused - an NMEA GPS antenna does that for you?

If the display doesn't handle AIS NMEA messages then it's useless to you. The unit is still good value though (assuming it lasts) as it acts as a receiver and multiplexer as well.

If you attach an AIS antenna and basic GPS antenna ( not GPS receiver) to this device, it should produce a AIS display ( on plotter ?) and provide an NMEA signal for my Raymarine RL80........or not ?

This will not work for AIS.
The box will transmit the data over NMEA.
The RL80 will say "Huh? I have no clue what to do with AIS message data" and ignore it.

It should work for sending GPS data for position, but then why would you not buy something that was just a GPS receiver instead...

Think am going to stick to a Evergreen GPS receiver to provide location data.
It was just the forlorn hope that the little box could display , AIS info on my Pathfinder screen somehow .
Thanks for all comments.

You can send the info over wireless to your phone I suppose that has an appropriate app to display AIS? Personally I'd upgrade the RL80 - if you don't have radar the later C90W has a built-in GPS and is AIS compatible and an easy swap.

I looked at this 12 years ago when AIS was first available.
Our old boat had a network of Raymarine RL Pathfinder devices.
I'm sure that this old Raymarine range cannot display AIS - in any form with any external device.
Like all other kit, this old Raymarine RL Pathfinder series can read NMEA 0183 data.
NMEA data consists of a number of sentences.
Each sentence carries the information for a particular function.
The plotter can receive NMEA position data from a GPS receiver.
Modern plotters can also receive AIS data from an AIS receiver.
The old Raymarine RL Pathfinders were developed before AIS came out and the software inside the RL plotters has never been upgraded to include displaying AIS sentences.
So to recap, the old Raymarine RL Pathfinders will never be able to display AIS.

I hope that helps

BTW the guy who developed the Quark device mentioned in the OP has posted on this forum in the past.

I would second that. Pathfinder stuff is just sooooo old now. Even if you upgraded just one generation to the classic c or e series you could get AIS and probably keep much of the ancillary equipment that is networked into it. What price a pair of c or e80's? I imagine you could get change from a grand.
