Just done an oil change on a pair of Yanmar diesels.
To speed to job up pumped out the old oil from both engines via dipstick holes before changing filters etc and refilling.
This left me with two dipsticks to reinsert to check levels in both engines.
The dipsticks are identical apart from the empty / full marks are different on each dipstick.
Why me ?

Fill one engine with the correct amount of oil. See which of the two dipsticks shows the correct level. That's the right dipstick for that engine. Do the same on the other engine to double check.

On some engines, part of the initial commissioning process is to fill the engine to the main and then max levels by measuring his much goes in, and you then mark the dipstick accordingly.
This is to account for the engine being fitted at a downward angle, which can interfere with the reading.
Admittedly, I can't explain why two engines would end up mounted at different angles in the same boat (assuming a cat).

Do the dipsticks go directly into the block or into tubes attached to the block? If the latter, are the tubes the same length?
