Hi,

As some of you maybe aware i am currently bringing back to life a classic westerly cirrus 1969, i need to know if i have to install emergancy gas and electric cut off switches like you do in river /canal cruisers as in the four yrs certificate, the one i want is the 15 yr one. also the gas bottles are stored under the seating in the rear of the cockpit with a metal bracket securing. is this normal ?

Its a long time since i did boat regs, so can someone please fill in the blanks . or point me to a web site that deals with this regarding a small yacht of 22 feet or there abouts.

Thanks, Jason.

You only have to meet the inland waterway regulations if you are going the permanently moor the craft within their waterways.

You need to do vortually nothing to sail on the open sea.

Inland Waterways - You must comply with the BSS Regs.

Other waters such as tidal, offshore, etc. - do as you wish - there are no regs to comply with regardless of what you may hear. The limitation comes when you want Insurance. You may have to have a survey and then Surveyor may highlight areas that are considered unsafe - ie. no gas locker drain etc.

I think the regulations vary from country to country. Apart from inland waterways controlled by BW, there are no legal requirements in the UK. Best practice however says that the gas locker must vent overboard and have a vent at the top as well. You need to have a means of shutting off the supply inside the locker, not just at the delivery end. The recommended setup has leak detector, remote solenoid valve and Gaslow valve in the locker and shut-off valves at each appliance. A bit OTT for a 22 footer so it's up to you how far you go. The most vital thing is the overside drain and the valve in the locker. And the bottles must either be in a close fitting slot or be strapped in.
