An awkward galley due to poor headroom.
Just 1 x heads.
600 liter off centerline water tank.
Cheap looking, back to 1975, slit saloon windows.
Horrible MFI style saloon that would look down market even on a budget AWB 32 footer from Kurdistan.
Poorly apportioned division of the LOA that results in a 5'4" saloon berth.
Weak lift up settee backs.
Exposed MDF inside lockers.

But in the new Summer 2010 issue of Yachting Monthly the editorial team praise it with a 86% score. Unfortunately you cannot decide for yourselves because the 360 VR tour is not yet up on the web site.

Edit: I misquoted the percentage score. 86% is the highest YM 100 point result todate.

That's the sort of thing that happens when you give the same number of points to "size of chart table" as to "quality of hull construction".

Have you noticed that the new boat they review always gets more points than the used one, and how little the points allocated to each heading seem to correspond to the written comments.

care to tell those of us who haven't seen the mag yet which yacht this is?

£53,550, is the 4 a typo?
Nope, it is a 40ft Najad.

Looking further at the review I have spotted a naff poorly supported glass splash screen between the galley and saloon seating.

Low side fiddle height on the nav table, unlike my Bavaria I would not be happy to leave a laptop there at sea.

Add to that the horrible gun metal grey grab handles in the coachroof ceiling and I am left genuinely puzzled who would buy this model when a lovely new Malo 40 is screaming "buy me" for a whooping £120k saving.

It needs repeating, "MDF" in a £450k yacht! Despite the rumours and 6 years of searching I have not found any MDF in my 2004 Bavaria. There might be some used for the smaller locker doors but these are so well veneered this is just a guess.

£1/2 million for a production 40 footer.... feck me.

That is a bit expensive.

Only a bit ????

There is a saying that goes '' a fool & his money are soon parted''
Only a fool who would cough up that kind of money for a bit of plastic.

In a nutshell

For £453,550 sailaway you get AN OLD BOAT with all the quirky characteristics of AN OLD BOAT except the price, to pay that you have to want AN OLD BOAT alot!

what has changed since the last one? they've made it "cheaper" and increased the price!

People are always quick to knock Bavarias and other production boats but some posts on what you do actual get extra on so called quality boats might be informative.

IIRC a 47' Bavaria headline price is £167k. A Beneteau 47' is about £300k and a 43' Southerly is about £450k.

Please correct my guess prices but I think they are in the right ballpark - food for thought.

What I really like to see thoug is a group on an old 80's GRP say 28' (value say £20k) sailing down the Solent and getting every bit as much pleasure as the oyster owner!!

Just done a weekend dinghy racing and the sailing pleasure per £ is unbeatable!

Never mind the article writers. Ayup a minute, does not a well known writer for these mags have ties with Najad.....or am I mistaken!

If it's the same writer I'm thinking of, it's Malo.

10/10 for the chart table? Someone's having a laugh - seemed fairly pokey to me for a 40 footer, with little imagination or space for instruments

Indeed I think it was meant to double up as a coffee side table for the adjoining settee, hence its compromised utility as a chart table.

What irks me is that in the very same issue the Bavaria 36 chart table only scores 7 out of 10. The chart table in my Bavaria is a near match for the Bav36 and I feel confident it is at least as good as the shallow fiddled side table on the Najad.

I was expecting something nice from Najad, but 1/2 a million for this

Where's the rest of it??

Gosh!!!!

Very, very expensive, considering that we've just bought a new Jen 42 DS for less than half that price including every last bit of string, loo rolls and saucepans.

I was attracted to the Jeanneau by amongst other things the very well supported glass splash screen between the galley and saloon seating. You should have a look Jonjo, you'd be impressed!:D
