Food basics on a boat

Being on a sailing boat, I usally stock up on foods good for wind, for example...

Pickled eggs
Beans and lentils
Cabbage, cauliflower and sprouts
Prunes and dried apricots
Pickled onions

Never becalmed.

It should be illegal to go to sea with only some strange poncy tea, and not tell the crew until you are past the Nab Tower, that's for sure.
Some of us need proper 'truck drivers tea' with a bit of taste and colour to it.
Knowing that it might be hard to get even when you reach port is not great!
When I'm sailing on other people's boats I usually take my own teabags now, as well as some better instant coffee. I seem to know people who buy cheap 'orrible instant coffee, and people who only do 'complicated machine' coffee. I need something in the middle, and I want it frequently please!
I do have an all-stainless cafetiere.

I had a very long delivery & had to put up with builders tea bags contaminated by earl grey that someone had put in the same container. Yuck!

Even knew people who drank that aftershave flavoured muck, with UHT!

few dissapointments

there are few dissapointments that can match the feeling you get when you are handed a cup of tea on a cold day only to discover that it is Earl Grey. flowers are for looking at .... not for drinking.

Well spotted Mr Babylon, that is exactly where I picked it up : )

The amazing this is that my dad, never been interested in sailing or the sea, noticed my copy of The Cruel Sea on my bookshelves about a year or so ago, and burst out with 'Snorkers!' It turns out that he had read the book in the 1950s - and that was only the bit he remembered.

I can only imagine that Monserrat must have encountered the real life prototype of his fictional Australian First Leiutenant, and exacted his revenge. :D

A lot of poncy ideas around here, what about:

Snorkers in lard - Good Oh

"Oh Gods, No, you've set Mallaby off again with his string!":D

Damn, just seen all the other Compass Rose posts, should have started at the end of this Thread instead of reading it properly in sequence, before posting!
"Gawd, aint it marvellous 'ow the Scum rise to the top!"

Earl Grey was the only tea I would drink, but if some idiot put milk in instead of lemon.......

Try some with lemon, It's not tea as we know it but it is a good summer drink, flowers and all.

In fact, we have just bought a load lemons so I might give it a rebirth.

Peppermint tea is good for the queasy stomachs, plus crystallised ginger and ginger bikkies.

We are like the teas aisle at Waitrose- airtight boxes of the above, camomile, green, lemon and ginger, etc etc.
BUT
the really big box is full of Yorkshire builders tea teabags, 'two to the half mug and let it stew' for yours truly:D:D:D

I drink lemon tea - can get it as tea bags, with the lemon bits already in them - drink it black of course.

However, not keen on lemon aftershave!

essentials

I have been to tescos and M and S and bought all the essentials mentioned above - put them into the lockers

the boat sank by 2 inches under the weight of 28 types of tea, smores, seven different types of coffee and an astonishing amount of alcohol

the boat is now floating - actually more sort of wallowing - two inches below its marks

I am prepared for any tea party occasion though

WOT 8 posts and no mention of Fray Bentos.

Steak and Ale pie.

Steak and Kidney pud for days when you need some comfort food.

Sourced both in the Caribbean and in the locker.

See Vics post at number 3 :D

Personally I have three months food on board

A friend showed me that we could store dried stuff in the bilges in large coca cola bottles, ala powdered milk, rice, pulses, dried potato etc.

I would like dried egg powder for scrambled egg etc, but can't seem to find any.

Go to the pound shop and stock up on tuna flakes 2 for a pound

I don't like boiling in the cabin and have a little gas stove in the cockpit.

Condensed Milk

I love a good cuppa - NATO issue: strong, sweet and milky

I swear by condensed milk in those squeezy bottles - lasts ages (weeks) out of a fridge and tastes better (IMHO) than the powdered stuff I have for back up.

Not so good if you don't like it sweet though.
