I spent the last three days working on the boat at Shotley and (being the organised soul that I'm not) had a chance to sample the food locally.

Basically, we won't be going to the Shipwreck any more. The food is distinctly average - I fancied a burger, £7.95 I think. The burger itself was nothing special, the bread roll was of the type that usually has 'value' or 'long life' on the wrapper and the chips were limp and tepid, and a tiny tub of coleslaw salad that was freezing. Just not very inspiring....

Then we went to the Bristol Arms. What a difference. The Cod and Chips was outstanding - super crispy chips, lovely thick pieces of fish with just the right amount of batter on it. Washed down with a great pint too.

It's a shame really. I like Shotley as a cruising base and the staff are always helpful, but I miss having good food on site. The Shipwreck has potential to work well, a great location and view of the harbour. For now, the Bristol Arms gets my vote and trade.

The mate and I went to the Bristol Arms on Saturday night.
Food was good and the service friendly.

If I had to moan, the steak I had was obviously flavoured with powdered garlic, and the mate's substantial plate of seabass with chilli oil.

However, generally a positive experience.
The bar area had been refloored and the layout opened up by the removal of the old dinette booths on the flank wall.

In fact what TABS should be doing for the Ramsholt Arms, although how they imagine they will get any takers in todays market at the reported rent and lease terms they appear to be seeking, is anybody's guess.

The Shipwreck has always disappointed on my visits over the years.

I have to say I am surprised as things have distinctly improved recently.

I say that as someone who used the Shipwreck regularly until the changes last year after Sarah went and I would agree it lost its way to the point we stopped going in. However into this year things have improved and the ambiance of the place has been lifted and quality improved significantly. Local meat and produce is being sourced from Suffolk Food Hall, the meal we had on Saturday was excellent.

A Steak is £15.00 but you can get Sausage & Mash etc for well under a tenner. One of our party had a Burger (home made) and commented it was one of the nicest in a long while.

I guess it could have been an off day.

Believe me I made my feelings known with the downturn to those 'on high' and true to their word from my recent experience they have got the management to lift their game.

I went to the Bristol arms last week and had fish and chips - cold fish - and a pint - Ok - and then a coffee - the Coffee was awful - in contrast I had the same yesterday at the shipwreck and it was better and cheaper - so surprised at the comment. I also like a pint of Adnams - which you can't get at the BSA.

I do hope so (off day). To be fair, we only ate in the bar, not the restaurant area so only looked at the bar menu. I think I was just disappointed at the 'ordinariness' of it. I'm happy to pay a pound or two more for better quality...

+ 1, last year I wouldn't have gone near the place but recent experience has been vastly improved in every aspect and I will be continuing to patronise the place unless that changes.

I have to say that I last had a burger there a couple of years ago but I recognise Sea Spray's description. A plain, unexceptional burger on the cheapest, nastiest bread with no salad or relish. Really poor. There are a couple of things that are ok on the menu, but they should be doing much better.

Shipwreck bar menu OK recently

Restaurant menu still iffy

Realise this contrasts with OP's post so guess they have a quality / consistency issue
